What is your opinion of the Maverick brand of shotguns for home defense use?
I don't know anything about the brand, other than they are made by Mossberg. I guess the real question is do they function every time?

Thanks

I've only got 50rd or so through mine, but it's worked flawlessle every time. I have one of the newer Maverick 88's that have guide arm on each side of the pump. They claimed that the older 88 models only had the arm on one side and that it didn't function so well. I can't complain a bit about mine though, and for $150 it was a great wally world deal.

It didn't get along with Remington Nitro 2 3/4" shells for some reason though. They wouldn't eject properly. Federals work like a charm though and that's all I normall use anyway.

Mine came with a 28" field barrel, but you can either get a replacement 18 1/2" for $50 or I hear that Academy sells the 88 w/ short barrel for about $150 also.

Confirmed. The Tulsa Academ on 81st sells 'em for $148.xx

I had an older 88 and it worked fine with everything i fed it.
I just bought a new one at Academy for $150.18 out the door with 2 boxes of 00 buck and the free aluminum double rifle case. :)

The only difference I see between it and my Mossberg persuader is that the Mossy is tapped for a scope and sling.

I think it's a great value. It is very similar to a Moss 500, but it's not drilled/tapped, only has 1 extractor claw, and the forend isn't easily replaceable.

In OKC they are $137. Last week was free double rifle case giveaway. Wait about 2 more weeks for the next one before you buy.

I relative of mine just bought one of these about two weeks ago. I was nice enough to break it down and clean it for him. I talked to him a week after he test fired it and he said his hand was still sore but the swelling had gone down. He shot one or two Remington 2 3/4 buckshot and slug rounds through it. He just wanted to make sure that it functioned and that it was ready for home defense.

I put about 100rds in one this weekend. It worked great. Unfortunately the Academy sale ended yesterday.
