What's the best way to obtain one of these?

It looks like buying a current one is super expensive. What about building my own? I haven't seen any barrels for sale like I do for AR's and others. Another thought is buying an AK pistol, getting my stamp, and then adding a stock. Do the AK pistols have modifications to prevent easy attachment of a regular stock?

An AMD-65 has about a 121/2" barrel without the muzzle brake on it. I guess you could buy a kit and build a SBR. The AMD-65s that are for sale have a brake welded on them to make the barrel 16".
To put a stock on an AK pistol, you would have to rerivet a different trunion into the rear of the receiver.

You could buy a Krinkov kit and have it built on your form 1'd receiver. Lots of Krinkov pics and info on the AK47 Krinkov section of ar15.com.

Thanks for the all the input.

Has anyone had one of these built (or done it themselves)?

Side folder, underfolder, or fixed stock?

As far as appearance goes, I'm not a huge fan of the side folder look.

I like the look of the below pic (borrowed from arfcom photo thread)

My favorite is the underfolder. I've shot several AKs built by individuals and I liked them better than the Century "luck of the draw" Aks. I don't know much about the SBR laws (never owned one) and I've never had an AK built. It would be interesting to know because, I have thought about getting one built.

Firing Line is top notch. One of the top AK builders in the nation. Mike Friend is the owner - GREAT guy and very squared away when it comes to AKs!

When I get back from my trip. I have a Yogo Krink kit and a Firing Line milled side folder receiver in white that I am Form 1'ing and going to send it to Firing Line to have it built. I talked to them at the Tulsa Show!!!!
They didn't have any under folder receiver's in stock but you can call and put your name on a list!!!!

If you want to have Firing Line do a build for you, I'd really recommend getting it to them as soon as possible. They are not back logged too bad right now, but sometimes they get 4-6 months of work stacked up!

Actually, one of the BEST ways is to just deploy to S.W. Asia, kill a bad guy and then confiscate his weapon for your own personal use during the rest of your tour.
