Well here is what im thinking. I want to buy a savage 10fp or simular rifle in 308 cal with heavy barrel and all the accuracy mods i want then i want to put a super sniper scope on top with leupold bases and rings and a can on the end. Can i put a suppressor on a heavy barrel fairly easy? Is the caliber a big concern when suppressing (ie cost and effectiveness)? Im also wondering if i got with low rings will the silencer be seen in my scope? Ive never owned a suppressor but from what i hear all you have to do is pay 200 bucks and get fbi fingerprints and a Form 1 and wait 90-120 days.

Now that said is it worth having for someone who doesnt have much problem with shooting when ever where ever? Ive not completly decided for or aginst the project yet but i was wanting to talk to a dealer of suppressors. Thanks in advance for the help either way. OWT

I am planning on putting my YHM http://www.yankeehillmachine.com/store/phantom762.html
on my Rem. 700 Police. I am getting the one with the QD mount.
Have you every been around someone shooting a can?????
You will need to go sub-sonic to get the most out of a can. A 308 going below 1000FPS.

So what your saying is im going to have to load light to make it completly silent? I was planing on shooting max power is that still going to be as loud as a .22?

There is a pretty good super sonic crack in my 223. It is hearing safe. You don't have the blast. I like the cans so I dont have to wear ear muffs.

Here is something to look at.
http://www.srtarms.com/30can.htm

The ATF has got the turn around time on the Form 4 down to 30 to 45 days!!

Thanks for the link i thought i was going to get a slight hiss noise and that was it i wasnt aware it would be just under 140dbs which is just a little more than my dirtbike. Im starting to think no on it since im not going to get complete silence lke i was expecting. Thanks for the help this makes things a lot easier to decide on.

Can's are great! Just there not like what you see on TV.
Do you ever go to Little Sahara State Park? If you do let me know and I will hook up with you and I will let you shoot my guns with my can's to see what thay are like.

Where to begin....

First I would suggest a Rem 700 instead of a Savage. I know this can be like Chevy vs. Ford with some guys but the Rem is my choice (and the Army/Marines....).

Super Snipers are great little scopes and very good for the money but limited on their use with the fixed power. Good starter scope though and you can always upgrade.

Leupold base/rings aren't the greatest and for literally a few bucks more you can get TPS or for a little more Badger. You shouldn't go cheap on base/rings because that is a very critical component.

Yes you can put a can on a heavy barrel. I actually suggest you go as heavy as you can stand to help minimize barrel sag/whip from the extra weight the can will add. All you have to do is have a gunsmith thread it. I send all my stuff to RD Precision in California because there isn't anyone local I would trust.

Low rings are what you want. You will not see the can.

Now lets talk about ammo...

I don't agree with wlcharm. Most people will tell you to stay around 1000 - 1050 fps for bolt guns. If you go below 1000 you greatly increase the risk of a baffle strike or the bullet getting stuck on the barrel.

You also need to forget every movie you've seen because as you said... "to make it completely silent".... just isn't going to happen.

I shoot full power ammo through my .308 with a can the majority of the time and I don't have to wears but it's not quiet either. Sub-sonic ammo is cool but doesn't really have a purpose because it will only be accurate out to about 200 yards and that's pushing it. It's just cool to shoot a few to show people.

So in closing.... Get one and enjoy!

There is a pic of my Rem 700 with SWR Omega can on my website... http://www.aotactical.com/gallery.html

Thanks everyone for the info. Im thinking it would be fun but not practical for what i was wanting. I may go to little sahara this year we have been talking about when but no one has said yet. I am dieing to get the 28' cargo loaded and take off. I need a whip and paddle for my kx265 first though. I will yell at ya if i decide to we can at least go riding. Thanks again but im gonna pass and see what happens. Gotta build the gun up first then by the time i finish that build i might be ready for one.
