Has anyone else had their range bag rifled through by the guys at H&H? I try not to go there because of their silly ammo policies. Last time I went, they went through my bag.

They usually just ask me what kind of ammo I'm shooting and if it's American made. I always say "Yes, made right in my living room". I'm not sure what their issue is on foreign ammo, but if I ever do bring some in, I'm sure not going to let them know about it :wink2:

I've gone to H&H an average of once per week for several years and have never had anyone go through my range bag. Perhaps once a year someone will ask what ammo I'm using - usually someone new who doesn't know me; but I've never had a problem. What, exactly, are their "silly ammo policies"?

I went to H&H today, and not a problem. I've been shooting there for several years and have never had a problem either.

Only if it's pistol caliber.

Hmmm...so, if I had a pistol verson of the AR....then 5.56 would be a pistol caliber.....wow, that'd be a nice piece for CCW...although it'd be kindof hard to conceal it with a 100 round drum hangin off it. :punch:

No steel in the projectile.

Several years ago, I shot in a bullseye league there at H&H. I spent a lot of time there. I never saw them go through anything! Is there more to the story here?

The concern over ammo there is that steel bullets do not work well against their indoor backstop. Lead cored bullets just mash up, and slide up the plates as intended. Bullets that do not deform tend to bounce around quite a bit. Remember shooting a BB gun as a kid? Remember how you can bounce BB's? Doing that with big, high speed bullets in an enclosed environment just won't make anybody happy. I remember asking the guys at the counter once why it mattered WHERE my ammo was made. They explained that they're just checking for steel bullets, and when they find them, it's almost always in imported ammo. So by asking if it's American ammo, they're just summarizing an otherwise long conversation.

Great explanation - thanks!
I'm very glad they ask. In fact, I think they should be a little MORE aggressive about it. I've been hit twice by lead (both times in the leg) and I hate to think what would have happened it they had been steel bullets.

They need to ungrade thier backstop so they won't have to worry about anything.

Hard metal on hard metal is going to always produce problems. They could invest in a back stop that would allow them to use steel core ammo, but that would directly translate to higher range fees. Its really not a big deal to use lead core bullets, they're cheap enough. $3.88 for a box of 9mm Blazer at Academy. Just my thoughts.

They have only gone through my stuff once when I first started going there, but since then I don't get any issue. Not that I care, its their job to provide a relatively safe shooting environment.

Range fee's....what are these range fee's you speak of? I'm not used to having to pay to shoot another Big +1 for Lexington. :thumb:

Steel core ammo? Snice 1986, you supposedly could not buy it. Their "silly policy" is that they want you to buy their ammo. I just wish they would be more honest about it.

Mmmm, wrong (well, maybe not "core" but there's steel in the projectile). Take a magnet to some S&B or milsurp 7.62 X 39. You can definitely buy it, and H&H could care less where I get the Blazer I bring in.

Wow... In addition to never having them go through my range bag; I have never been told, nor have I ever had the impression they had a "silly policy" to buy their ammo. Of course they have ammo available! I would expect a gun range to have ammo available; but in all the years I've gone there, they have never indicated I had to buy their ammo when shooting my own guns.
Kind of amazing how such a trival incident - with the sole purpose of YOUR safety - can get so twisted and be so misinterpreted.

I've been shooting there a bunch, in fact I just bought a membership. I've been brining in the blazer ammo and never had a problem. Of course, I don't have a range bag yet, so I'm just carrying the boxes in my hands...

I submit to you,the following:

Steel *cased* ammo
and
Steel *jacketed* ammo

S&B does not have steel in it. It has a tin wash under the jacket. The magnet trick is a used car tactic. I do not shoot steel cased ammo either.
