22 days! That's great.
I just sent off 2 form 4's last week. Hope I get similar results.
If you don't mind my asking, what new "toy" did you get Doc?

Ah, well congrats on the "shorty" shotgun!
I got my form 4 back last week in 21 days and my father-in-law got his back in 22 days. I did a SBS two years ago and it took 3 1/2 months.

I can't complain about the timing. I read horror stories all over the net and then get my stamp back before I can even make a final decision on the build.

Dr. Baker, I believe you were looking for a 12.5" 870 barrel. In your searching did you happen to come across any factory 14" 870 barrels or someone who can properly cut down a longer barrel and move the bead/bead base?

I found a few options that might work for you. I can email you some contact info and price estimates tonight. I don't have the info with me right now.

DrBaker, so what did you end up doing as far as barrel choices?
After 2 months of dragging butt on the paperwork, I finally sent off my form 1 today for my own 870 SBS project. I ordered a Scattergun +1 mag extention and will chop the barrel flush with it (Appox 14"). Ordered Trijicon ghost ring sights as well, but will have to fab and solder a front sight base on first. I'd planned on Parkerizing it, but would have to coat the alloy trigger housing anyway, so I'll just blast it with #120 and Duracoat in Park gray.
As of right now, I think I'll shorten the stock pull to 12" and re oil it (It's an old 870 Police riot gun from Summit Gunbroker). Maybe add the Hogue short stock set if I don't like the look.
Should be an interesting HD and truck gun.

I started with a factory 870 barrel. I had assistance from Nanotech9 who is skilled with his lathe.
We shortened it to 12.5", drilled & tapped it for the custom front sight he built, and then touched up the finish.
I'm very happy with the results.

Strap hanging onto the thread here..:)
FYI to any other folks willing to part with the $200+ just to chop up perfectly good firearms.
Sent my completed form 1 off on 31 May and per a call today, it arrived to the Richmond, VA BATFE office on 8 June, forwarded to the Atlanta office on 9 June for whatever they do with it, still not back to Richmond for the final stuff. The lady that answered was surprisingly polite and helpful and said that it should be done within a week or so, maybe a bit longer because of the 4th holiday.
Not as quick as others, but still not bad. Now the $200 ransom... That sucks. There's no reason to charge any more than the $5 for an AOW.
My 14" barreled, 6 round, shortened LOP/ oil finished stock & forend, ghost ring sighted, park gray Dura Coated Rem 870 is awaiting it's tax stamp for assembly.
The anticipation of completing another project is part of the fun.

I think the only reason for the paperwork is just to slow you down from buy too many NFA toys to quick!!!!
P.S. I just put a 9MM can on order!!!!!

Anyone know of web references for DIY suppressor details? Might serve to justify buying a lathe. I've messed with them years ago in the Army, didn't seem that complicated.
Of course many things in their finished/ tested and proven form seem simple. Still, it could be another fun build that requires me to buy another tool- I call that a Win-Win situation.

Agreed.
I think mousehouse would be able to shed some light on your questions. I'm not skilled enough to do it myself, but I guess everyone has to learn somehow.

Unsafe if you are going to use the lathe for other reasons besides building form 1 suppressors then it is worth the money. The one thing people forget is buying the lathe is only one part. Buying the tools is the other and most likely will cost you more then the lathe.
Making threaded end caps is probably the hardest thing about building a suppressor. Silencertests.com has a lot of good information about what designs are out there. If you need a little help let me know. I am just about finished with my 223 can. It has taken a while to build it and to decide on a design. It is 100% stainless steel and 8 inches long.
The problem a lot of people have is they think the more baffles you have the quieter it will be. That isn't true. There is a point to where it will make it louder the more baffles you have. Do a lot of research and draw multiple designs on paper. It can be the easiest most simple design in the world or the hardest. They all work to some extent.
I am using a k-baffle design. The blast baffle I made is my own design but the others are normal k-baffles. You will also need a good drill press and a mill depending on what baffle you want to make. You will also need a band saw or cut off saw of some sort.
Tactical Innovations uses m-baffles in their Tac 16 cans. What caliber are you thinking about building if you decide to get a lathe? Just about any design will work on a 22. When you get into the rifle calibers you might have to be a little more creative.
Let me know if I can answer any more of your questions. Post them on here, email me or PM.
Waiting on a friend to tig weld the end caps on my suppressor. Once that is done off to the range for some testing. I have a couple to compare it to but we will see if I can get them all out to the range at the same time.
No telling how much time I have in building this suppressor. I started this project for a couple of reasons. First was to see if I could do it. Second was because I didn't want to spend $600-$800 on a 223 suppressor. Third I like building things. I will have $200 in this can when I am finished. That doesn't include any labor costs. It takes about 1 hour to make each baffle. So about 5-7 hours just on the baffles. Another hour or two on the tube and end caps. You will have 6-10 hours in a suppressor when you are finished. So you have to ask yourself what is your time worth. The thing I liked about it is I could work on it a little bit at a time and come back to it whenever I felt like it. I started this process in February and I am just now finishing it.

Oh! I feel a project coming on........
Thanks guys, I'd expected that others had tinkered their way into suppressor builds, but never really considered it myself until finding out how easy the NFA paperwork really is. Too bad it costs so much.
I MIG better than I TIG, but can do both decently enough. Have wanted a Lathe for other reasons, but this might knock me off the fence rail toward a purchase.
Added- Years ago in the Army, when we lost our 1911's and first got the 92's, we got extra barrels and suppressors with them. They used urethane rubber wipes/ discs inside that worked surprisingly well. Made for the subsonic ammo, they still made standard 9mm ball a little louder than a slide being released. I didn't appreciate all the toys that I had access to at the time because of so many other priorities.
So, maybe I'll start with a .22 can for a quiet 10/22 build... The possibilities are limited only by my wallet :thumb:
