Does anybody have experience with Cor-Bon ammo?
I am looking for a .38 +P or .357 Magnum Lite load for self defence
inside. Cor-Bon has a .38 +P load, 125gr jhp 1100FPS. Does Cor-Bon
ammo live up to their billing and how is the flash from their ammo, more
or less than average? Thanks for any info.

best ammo there is..period
I've had setback problems with their 9mm and 357sig.
Although I've never shot any from a ransom rest,I have found it to be less accurate than other ammo.
I've tried to like CorBon over and over but it just doesn't cut the mustard as far as I'm concerned.
YMMV.

+100 here.......i have found their 9mm 125gr +p very accurate
Also,I wonder why Cor-Bon stopped loading Gold Dots?
Much better bullet design than the Sierra they currently use,IMO.

If you are looking for a 38 special it depends on the barrel length.
If your barrel is 4 inches or longer you have a lot of leeway but any of the 158 grain semi-wadcutter hollowpoints are good choices.
If you have a j-frame or any other 2 or 3 inch barreled gun, the Speer Gold Dot 135 grain +P is the choice of those who do impartial testing.
I would not choose Cor-Bon is 38 or any caliber right now.

Probalby cause gold dots are designed at a very specific velocity. Corbons are usually considerably hotter. They may of fragmented too violently or openend up to soon. Or the flip side Corbon went the cheap route to make more money :wink2:
CoBon also used to load 147gr gold dots.
That would probably be a decent round.

I like the 9mm+P Cor-Bon loads.
They are very acurate in my guns.
I'm not sure about the one shot stop numbers but I would think that they would be good enough for selfdefence if you can hit with them. They sure are expensive though.

I have Corbon 125gr in my snub nose 357 that I carry.
Michael, why do you not recommend corbon?

Also, I have noticed it creates blue smoke; I heard smoke=cheap powder?

Don't really dig Cor-bon and I've seen a fair number of internet lore threads on it... if I want hot stuff I order DoubleTap.
I've tried the Pro-Load and really like it but I haven't ventured into the Double Tap yet.
I suppose it's time to order some.....

Let me first say I'm not a ballistician. I have minimal formal training in wound ballistics.
Typically I rely upon the most scientific, impartial testing I can find. Currently several ammo companies publish their testing and protocols. I don't find any of these reliable since the companies are not unbiased testers.
I rely most on the work of Dr. Gary Roberts, Dr. Martin Fackler, and Duncan McPherson. Special Agents Buford Boone and Urey Patrick of the FBI also have some good research that mirrors that of Fackler and Roberts.
None of them have anything good to say about the terminal performance of CorBon ammunition. They all say it does not penetrate enough and tends to shed its jacket.
All the scientists who deal with wound ballistics idicate that the number one issue is sufficient penetration. Since the CorBon doesn't penetrate sufficiently in any caliber, these guys don't find it suitable for self-defense.

What is considered "good penetration"?

burner,
I think the FBI standard depth is a minimum of 12" but I could be mistaken.

I like cor-bon ammo. .357 mag, 9mm, etc... great ammo imo.

From my experence corbon is reliable ammo, but I have heard of problems with overexpansion/underpenetration and fragmentation. But I have also never attended any gel test so It could all be bull. But I don't want to chance it and use Gold dots or golden sabers.
