*RE-POST FROM GT....PICS LOST*
9mm ammo test results
Here is a comparison test I did with some popular 9mm loads.
I have posted this before but I couldn't find the thread to bump it to the top.
I'm going to test some different loads in the future as well as barrier/jug testing. If possible,I guess I could just add new results to this post.
BTW,this is great stuff to know in case you are ever on the receiving end of a milk jug attack.
I couldn't pull together enough jugs to do any barrier tests this time so I just shot into bare 1 gal. milk jugs at 10ft.
I shot each round twice and took the best of each although for the most part the two were exactly the same.
All rounds shot 5rd. groups no larger than 2.5" at 10yd. offhand out of a SIG 225
*unofficial recoil perception (weakest to strongest)
HST
GoldDot+p/Hydrashock +P+ (tie)
Ranger
CorBon (noticeably stout)
Penetration(worst to best):
Federal Hydrashock 124gr +p+
-One round was recovered in the 2nd jug and had damaged the 3rd jug enough to cause a hole but no penetration. The other round was recovered in the 3rd jug.
Ranger 127gr. +p+
-Both recovered in 3rd jug with a mild dent on back of third jug.
Speer Gold Dot 124gr +p
-Both recovered in 3rd jug, both dented back of third jug(one nearly penetrated).
CorBon 125gr +p
-One recovered in 4th jug,one recovered in 3rd jug but had busted a hole in 4th jug.
Federal HST 124gr
-One recovered in 4th jug,one recovered in 3rd jug but busted a hole in 4th jug.
______________
Recovered diameters (smallest to largest) measured with FAA calibrated Mitutoyo dial calipers.:
CorBon 125gr +P
.46 & .48
GoldDot 124gr+p
.60 & .60
Federal HST
.61 & .62
Federal Hydrashock124gr +p+
.65 & .66
Ranger 127gr+p+
.70 & .72
__________
When the petals of each are manually peeled out straight to see what their largest diameter was before fully mushrooming,we get:
Ranger- 1.2"
HST-1.04"
Hydrashock +P+-1.2"
GoldDot-.88"
CorBon-1.3" + fragmentation
I know this is not a realistic test but it is a basis for comparison for now.
I'll plan some barrier tests at a later date.
