*RE-POST FROM GT....PICS LOST*
.40 HP Expansion tests and .40 inaccuracy de-bunked.
O.K. boys and girls,I promised .40 tests...and here they are...
I ditched the water jug testing in favor of using 1gal freezer bags filled w/water in a homade,half-assed "Fackler box"
Testing went pretty well...
I tested three .40 loads;
UMC 180gr JHP ($20/100 at WM)
Ranger 165gr JHP
Cor-Bon 150gr JHP
I tested for:
-Recoil (subjective)
-Accuracy
-Expansion in bare water
-Expansion in 4 layers of denim
Recoil worst to least:
UMC 180gr JHP
Ranger 165gr JHP
Cor-Bon 150gr JHP
WWB 165gr FMJ
(I was really suprised that the Cor-Bon was so mild)
Accuracy was impeccable out of my new G23.
I fired three shot bech rest groups at 10 yd to try to remove as much human error as possible.
(measured center to center)
UMC 180gr = an outstanding .40"!
Ranger 165gr = .70"
Cor-bon 150grJHP = .78"
All rounds were recovered in 4th bag after being shot into bare water.
Expansion measured at widest point,including jacket:
UMC = .89
Ranger = 1.315!
CorBon = recovered slug was .63 jacket fragmented heavily
Expansion in 4 lavers of denim:
UMC = .83
Ranger = .80
corBon = .76
All rounds fired into denim dented back of test box slightly .
I'll have to use more bags next time.
As with my previous 9mm tests,the CorBon and Ranger both left the biggest "wound channels" through the material (when fired into bare water).The Ranger from it's long gangly jacket and the CorBon from it's fragmentation,I suppose.
