Randall,

Unless you're loading something that develops very low peak pressure (say under 8000 or 9000 psi), or something that sustains a slightly higher peak pressure for a only a very short time (e.g. a 12 to 15 kpsi load in a short barreled handgun), I suspect that you'll see cleaner results from the current Unique.

Unique (both the new and old varieties) burns more than adequately over a broad range of pressures; one trouble is that the effective balance point is somewhat dependent on the situation in which the powder is used. A not so good match of this powder to the work at hand will still result in soot and partially burned grains- yet this powder is reknowned for its' performance even when conditions are such that it hasn't developed and sustained the pressure needed for complete combustion. My opinion (for what little it's worth) is that the "change" in formulation is primarily a "tightening" of the acceptance standards for the raw materials used in the manufacture of Unique.

PB, because of its friable grain structure and similar burn rate, can sometimes help in situations where some people find partially burned Unique too "dirty". Of course, you'd have to work up new loads were you to experiment with PB.
