View Full Version : Backyard ammo tests?
Does anyone do any backyard ammo testing with chronographs or water jugs, gelatin, etc?
I've done several tests in various mediums (with pics) which I have posted on GT.When the search function gets fixed over there,I'll look up the tests and repost them here.Should be a few days according to Eric.
As I get more avilable time and ammo,I'll do even more tests and post them here.

J.P.,
If you're just doing it for fun, good on ya.
However if you're trying to test terminal ballistics, the work's been done by folks who have the equipment and test medium for it. Backyard testing isn't a good representation of terminal ballistics.
If you are looking for info on it, I can direct you.

I am aware of all of the professional testing that has been done but I can't put my hands on that. ;).
And I also realize that load selection is a very very small part of the equation,if any.
Frankly,I think it's all splitting hairs anyway but fun to do in your spare time.

If you are truly interested, I can show you exactly where to get it.
The trouble is generally in interpretation.

me and some friends shoot at phonebooks alot. sometimes we soak them in water and stack them in cheap lawnchairs. we try to dig out the projectiles afterwards.
toilets are pretty common too, a friend remodels baths and kitchens so we get old appliances and fixtures alot.
we are going to get my old car back there into the basin to shoot it up sometime soon. just to see what kind of damage we can do.
we should put some watermelons inside of it though. see what kind of damage goes on inside perhaps.......
i dont know anyone that even owns a chronograph.
its fun trying to find the projectiles in the phonebooks.
ill shut up now.
I've used wetpack newspaper, phonebooks, milk jugs, and lately I've built a wooden frame that you can put 1 gal. freezer bags full of water in.This seems to be the most reliable method so far.
It ain't gel,or badguys but it's fun.
I probably won't get to do any more testing until later in the year but the tests keep getting better.
I'll post pics when I do.
