Anyone going to take their handguns deer hunting in the morning? I have been thinking about taking my Colt with me, If I get a shot at bowhunting range, 25 yds or less, I may try to use it. For longer ranges it'll be the good ole' 30-30.

Yes I'll be taking the glock 32 in .357 sig. if I get a perfect shot at 15 yards or less I'll take it. If not mr. 30-06 will be taking care of business.

I will be carrying my Glock 23 with me tomorrow. If I get a chance at a short range shot (15yds or less) I may try and use it...anything longer and the trusty 7mm Mauser will be busy at work :)

I think I'll have to get a lot more powerful handgun- 357sig,40 s&w,45acp just ain't 'nuff in my book. Maybe a 10mm or desert eagle in 357/44 mag. Most pistols use bullets for human consumption. I don't want to lose another deer again, lost a couple in blackpowder round ball days, and like the magnun effect. BTW- hunt western part. ya know- the windy place

I would tend to agree with you. But at ranges of 15 yards and under those cartidges will do the job IMO. If they are not good enough for our typical 100lbs deer how can one depend on them with a 200+ pound agressive man? But then again if I was hunting western Oklahoma I don't think that I would use a SD cartidge handgun for hunting.

BUT, a 30 carbine AMT would be OK. Besides, NOBODY could run 20-2000 yards with a well placed 270 round in the chest. or in the buttocks, for that matter.

There are thousands of weapons out there that are legal to hunt, but I prefer to use what is famaliar. Shot placement is more important than energy. A heart lung with a .40 cal round ball, does just as good as a .50 cal Desert Eagle! I tend to look at reliability and humane shots! Thinking back on the rookie mistakes I have made, I have been fortunate to take deer.

Glock 20 will do just fine on all Oklahoma critters, except maybe elk and antelope. (Elk due to size, and antelope due to extreme range.)

is this conjecture or actual experience? have you ever shot a 200+ pound feral boar?
i put 3 rounds of 45-70 with a 405 grain bullet in a 2" semi circle around the eye of a boar last summer... took all three rounds before he quit running.. i wouldn't take anything smaller than 44 mag against one... 10mm? no way, those big hogs will take whatever you got in the clip and laugh at you

I think that most people don't think about feral hogs when they talk about hunting Oklahoma critters. They are relatively new.

I have hunted feral hogs with mine, and with several different types of ammo, they all die fine.

The key to hogs is shot placement and around the eye is not good shot placement. these critters have a thick skull. i have worked with them in hog barns before. i have killed them with .22 around the earhole is the best in my opinion course i sure as :censored: wouldnt take a .22 after feral hogs but i will take my bow or .357 ne day. course i have been called crazy a time or 2 lol

My .41 mag Ruger worked fine on a whitetail.
