What is everyone's opinions on an SKS? I am thinking that this may be my next purchase and would like to get some input on which ones are good and which to stay away from.

Of course, it all depends on what you want to do with the rifle. I started off with a couple of Norinco SKS' circa 1993 and I loved them. They were $99 each brand new, unissued and they were flawless. They ate everything I fed them and accuracy was at least 1 WOA (watermelon of angle=can hit the watermelon at 100 yards).

I sold them in 1995 when I needed money. I just ran across a deal on a Yugo SKS from a fellow board member and I bought it. It's in great shape but I haven't had time to go shoot it yet.

Hopefully, some more people will chime in here and we'll get some conversation going about them.

Overall, I like them a lot. The only thing I don't like is when people get all of the after market stuff for them and try to make them into an AK. If a person wants an AK, they aren't that much more. I've always liked an unmodified SKS with iron sights, no optics and the correct sling and nick nacks.

Thanks TwoBravo. The main use of it will be for hunting....for when I don't feel like carrying my 7mm Mauser :)

I guess it depends on what you want to hunt. "They" say that the 7.62x39mm in Soft Point is about equal to a 30-30 same type cartridge ballistically (sp). The SKS is not a light carbine per se. This Yugo SKS I have feels about like an M1 Garand weight wise but with a cartridge that is no where near as effective as a .30-06.

I guess you could get a Chinese one that takes detachable mags :nolike: that way it would be easy to put in a 5 round hunting mag. Or, I guess you could get a mag block for the built in 10 round mag to limit the capacity to 5 rounds.

Well, I'm partial to the Chinese SKS so I'd look for one of those. Also, it has a chrome lined barrel and the Yugo ones do not.

I've got a Chinese SKS. My son calls it "his" now, he has shot several whitetails with it.
I like it a lot. As TwoBravo says it is equal to the 30-30 as far as knockdown. You don't have to worry about magazine capacity on any deer rifle in OK except .223. Its the only one that is limited to 5 rounds.

Thanks for the input Mack. I've got a ton of deer out here at my place, but no hunting is allowed. I'm not into hunting anyway, as I'm sure you can tell by my lack of hunting law knowledge.

I was going to add, I've noticed a lot of places are backordered on 7.62x39mm ammo so that might be something to research as well.

Thanks for all the info guys. I will look into the ammo issue and see what I can come up with.

TwoBravo, I think that the actual limit on the 223's is 7 not 5. The reason why I remembered that is because how silly I think that it is. You can legally have a 75 round drum for your deer huntin' AK47 or a 30 round mag for your M1A but that evil black rifle better not hold more than 7 rounds for deer in Oklahoma. To top it off, I think that the .223 is marginal for deer. Legal but marginal. Please dont take offense at my input, its just my 2 cents, for all thats worth. Ha

No offense taken at all.

I might be a little late, but I just bought a Yugo and I love it. Ammo is cheap $2.50 per 20rds, cheaper if you buy it buy the case. The stock is a little short though.

I just got a Chinese SKS about a month ago. I picked it up for $150 with a folding stock, and 30 round mag. I just ordered a dragunov style stock for it a few days ago...

At the gun show on the 10-11 of december, I got 500 rounds for $60. The guys did say something about no more 7.62 x 39 being brought into the US for awhile.

I had a Yugo. Did all the tricks to it, played the 922r game, the whole nine----never did care for that gun. I am simply not a fan of com block guns.

Mediocre power, less than stellar accuracy. Reliability..yeah, they have that, but what the hell good is a reliable gun that wont hit squat?

I am sure they fill a niche somehwere, I just dont seem to have that niche.
