I had a dispute with a co-worker today: He thinks that carry in banks is prohibited, I say not unless the bank is government owned. He seemed to think being FDIC insured has something to do with it. Anyone have info?

I don't believe banks are specifically prohibited. However they are private businesses that can post.

what about a community federal credit union?

I carry in mine all the time, but then no one knows either. That's the whole point of CONCEALED carry. Even if they posted it still would be only trespassing according to my read of the law, of course I'm not a bottom feeder (oops, read-lawyer).

My thoughts exactly. Once I went into a MidFirst bank in Edmond, armed as usual, and met with a grizzled old (retired?) cop who was their security, and we talked a little on the subject. He indicated how he believed it was against Federal law to carry in a bank becuase of FDIC. I later found that this is nonsense, but at the time I said nothing. Of course he never knew I was carrying :)

Speaking of MidFirst, I've only noticed two of their branches (both in Norman) that are posted. Even the branch that houses the President's office was fair game, last time I checked. What are other peoples' experiences with MidFirst?
I'd really like to get the Norman signs taken down, particularly if they're at variance with company policy.

Unrelated, but avoid BOK if at all possible, they were a big sponsor of the million mom debacle.

Really? I was thinking of moving my account there, because First Bank of Owasso has no weapon signs posted and my dad works at bok.

The BOK at 23rd and Meridian doesn't have a sign up. Neither does the one at 36th and Main in Norman.

I'm in the tech area, making sure the bank runs, so I'm not sure about their stance on things. If you find anything on Stan Lybarger or George Kaiser and their stances, that is probably the BOK stance as well. =]

I had banked at FBO for 8 years when I started to carry. I closed all my accounts, and happily told the manager in charge of accounts the reason was their anti-gun policy.

It seems I have heard the same thing before. But then again, I could be wrong. My wife works for BOK. Hopefully that won't be the case for long. Anyhow, I am of the mindset that what people can't see won't hurt them, thus if it is concealed no one is the wiser.

What about Arvest? anybody know?
the branch I use in Shawnee is marked, but like others, I have thus far carried concealed, and fortunately have managed to resist the urge to whip it out and fire on all the poor innocent people, so no one is the wiser...

Yeah. Its hard not to whip it out when the first words to your balance are "negative".
Holy insufficient funds Batman, I have heard so many different opinions that I am now confused. I thought I remember reading in the OSBI packet that it was illegal to carry in a federally insured bank. I do not remember reading that about state insured banks. Credit unions? I do not know. It may depend upon whether it is federally insured or not. You can get so many different answers from the OSBI, that it may behoove us to read our packets again. I still think it is ironic that the places you need a gun most are the places that you cannot carry; i.e, a bank, liquour store, post office, etc.

hey Hoov,
I dont see why a person cant cary in a liquor store. You can't consume the liquor there so you can carry. THe 50/50 law only applires to a place of consumption. I also don't remember see anything about a fdic insurance regulations in my manual covering carry regulations at banks.
This is not intinded to flame you, but what manual are you reading?

I am a banker in central OK. Carry is determined by whether or not there is a sign. There was a significant discussion in the industry when CCW law passed and many institutions were of the opinion that prohibiting CCW and then having one injured in a hold-up who otherwise might have been carrying could subject the bank to liability. Consequently, the industry trade group recommended that it be left to individual bank's discresion. As far as I know that remains the standard.
Banks are not a part of the "Federal" prohibition.
