Have you heard of the CMP?[civilian marksmanship program I believe] I bought a Garand from the DCM before it became the CMP for $175. It takes a while before you get the rifle tho.

Way too high for a non-CMP gun, and WAY, WAY WAY too high since CMP is still an option. You can get a service grade CMP for less than 500 all day long.

CMP is the way to go...
it wont take 3 months to get the rifle--mine took about 3 weeks! the longest part was waiting for the GCA membership to post
you wont be disappointed with your garand--mine turned out better than i expected
if you have a reasonable, specific request, add it--i asked for a WWII rifle, and got a june '44 beauty, rebuilt in 65 by LEAD, and shoots like a champ
$1000 for a garand in my opinion, is way too much right now, especially with the availability of CMP rifles
good luck, and watch your thumbs!

CMP had complete wood sets available recently--i havent been on their website in about a month
they were new, aftermarket though, but reasonably priced at like $125
