View Full Version : Overheard at Gun show

I overheard this from a dealer at the OKC gun show on Saturday (1/29)..
"The days of needing a large caliber concealed gun for a center mass shot are over. You only need a small caliber small frame gun for up close eyeball shots."
He also said that you would be hard pressed to make your case for shooting someone from 25 yards in fear of your life. Of course, he was trying to sell a Kel Tec .32 at the time, but I would like to get others opinions on this statement.
I have not gone thru the concealed carry class so I do not know any of the current rules/laws. I am currently looking to get into a class and I am researching which gun I will carry, but I have not come to any conclusions.

well how close do you think someone needs to be shooting at you? Don't return fire until they are within 25 yards? I think NOT! If they have a knife I can see not shooting them at 25yards but if they are moving towards you holding the knife at a decent pace you should shoot them at least 12 yards away because their forward momentum can actually carry them to you and you are still at risk of being stabbed.

He is a dealer trying to sell a gun. Do your research and get something that you feel comfortable carrying/ handling and shooting. if that is a Kel Tec .32, buy it. If it's a compact Glock, buy it. If it's a full size 1911 in .45 cal, get it.
You need to get something that you feel confident and comfortable with. For me, its a Glock 19 9mm. It will be something different for everyone. Just takes some research and test firing.
Hope that helps you out.

Please for your sake.... don't listen to ANYTHING those dealers tell you. Find a gun that fits your hand and pick a caliber. 9mm, .40cal, .357sig, .45, 10mm all perform well enough to defend yourself, provided you can control the caliber.

The three worst places to find reliable information about self-defense:
1) Gun Dealers or shops
2) Gun Magazines
3) The Internet
Credibility is very important when getting advise on self-defense so, caveat emptor.

I know that there are lots of "which caliber" arguments to be found on every gun forum. I just found this dealers comments interesting. I wonder what he would have said to someone looking to buy one of the 1911's he also had on his table.
My decision on which gun to carry will be based on mainly what 38Super said. Right now I am enjoying the research process. The only trouble is there are too many guns to try and not enough time (or money).
And besides, everyone knows that eyeball shots are for patsies. It's the dreaded nostril shot that does it!

My comments to my conceal carry students are " carry the biggest caliber gun you WILL carry. A gun left in gun safe or vehicle does you no good on the street." Get very proficient with your carry gun, working from concealment and typical self-defense scenarios. In self-defense you want to stop the threat right then. If you only wound the threat, who subsequently kills you but also dies himself a few days later of a .22 wound, then have you achieved your intent?

I took a class put on by Tom Givens from Rangemaster. He made a valid case for carrying a service size pistol. With a front sight you can see. Shooting big bullets that make big holes with enough power to get to vital organs that will cease the brain to funtion. Eye shots under stress might be a hard thing to do. With a Kel-Tec you might have to stick it in his eye. His class gave me much to think about. And much work to do. By the way. If I get into a gun fight. I want Mr. M. Brown on my side. :gun1:

For the past couple of months I have been trying to educate myself about concealed carry as much as possible. I have read several post but have never heard anyone say something like this in person.
By the way, since this dealer (a/k/a expert) said that you do not need a large caliber gun anymore, please pack up all of your old worthless 45's, 40's and 9mm's and send them to me.
Thank you!

Here is one for you then.... You are standing at the magazine rack in QT. A guy walks in and sticks a gun in the clerks face and says give me the money. Do you draw and shoot him? He never points his gun at you or anyone else in the store.
Hub
A 32 is not a serious caliber.
the dealer was tryint to sell you a gun pure and simple.
Perhaps mike will expound on the dynamics of a SD scenario....

The rules for a private citizen (SDA or not) are in the OK statues. I you cannot answer the question "am I in fear of death or great bodily harm? " affirmatively, you cannot engage the gun holder with deadly force. You are limited to non-deadly force. You should ask the same question regarding those accompanying you IF they are on the SDA list (spouse, child, parent, etc).
I would advise quietly staying out of notice of the gun guy. You don't really know for sure what's going on. If he just grabs the cash and dashes, okay let him. You know as a private citizen you cannot shoot someone fleeing.
If the circumstances change, i.e. the gun guy starts shooting, points gun at you or appears like he's going to start eliminating witnesses, then IMO the rules have changed. When I was a teenager I lost a friend to an execution-style killing in a grocery store robbery. It won't happen to me.

Hell, if you're gonna draw attention to yourself might as well hit him in the head with the jar of pickles - it'll give you more time to draw from concealment than just dropping the jar on the floor anyway:D

Ron Jeremy would be my first guess.
As for the pickels I would personally knock over a jar of pickeled Lamas feet.

Once again, don't get self-defense advice from guys at the gun show.
Unless of course Ron Jeremy starts selling guns.:lookaroun

Actually I prefer to use the "shotgun to the eyebrow" method. It's proven 100% effective at deterring an attacker.

"One Shot One Kill OKC Style

That should be on a t-shirt, bumper sticker, or maybe a sign to hang at your front door.
