View Full Version : FA Friendly ranges for rifle calibers?

I have a registered received M-16 but can't find anywhere to shoot it. The indoor range will let me play with pistol caliber stuff but it is no-go for rifles.
This is frustrating. I have lived in this state for 5 years and have only shot it FA twice.
Is there somewhere close to OKC to shoot it?
Thanks.
I haven't seen any truly class 3-friendly ranges here in Tulsa either, and I suspect few truly exist. I think Red Castle is reasonably class-3 friendly compared to some of the other places around here, but they're nowhere near OKC of course. Until and/or unless you do find one, you may consider checking out some of the public ranges you get access to with a hunting license, i.e. ones like those in Okmulgee/Wagoner (I'm sure there are some down in the OKC area too). My friends and I have seen a few class three weapons out at the Okmulgee range from time to time, the best recommendation I can make to you is go out to a public range like the ones I mentioned down there in the OKC area, shoot semi like normal until the range is clear of everyone except you and anyone you went out with (which is extremely frequent at least at the Okmulgee range), then go FA until or unless anyone shows up. At least that's what a LEO we met out there said he did, apparently he had the same difficulty finding a place to shoot his guns. I know this isn't a perfect answer to your dilemna, but hopefully it will at least present you with an acceptable interim solution until you find a more permanent one. It is certainly frustrating to spend all that money on a firearm, only to discover few, if any places close enough to shoot it on anything approaching a regular basis, and I definitely emphathize with you on that. HTH.

There sre a lot of Class 3 shooters in Duncan, or at least that use the Duncan SCRAP range. As a amtter of fact, one of our own, Car-Ar-M16 is a Class 3 owber, IIRC, and he shoots at the SCRAP club.

That is too bad that there aren't more places. Maybe I will make the trip down to Duncan one day. I need to get out and do it more frequently. Do you need to be a member to use the range down there?

If you every make it up Enid way let me know. The Range I go to dont care what you shoot. It is the Garfield Rifle Association Range. Drive up, open the gate, drive in, close gate, and shoot.

That sounds like my kind of place. I got spoiled in AZ. You could go just about anywhere. Nobody would bother you. How long does it take to get from Enid to OKC?

About 1 1/2 Hr. Straight North on Highway 81. The range is about 4 miles north of town.
I know what you mean about AZ. I lived a Tucson for 8 years while I was in the Air Force.

Yes, you do need to be a member to use the range. There is no range master there, all members are given a key to the gate to get in. Dues are $50/year.

50/yr is reasonable. Do you need to know a member or is there some other requirement? I know someone down in Duncan that might be a member. I am interested in hearing more.
I think the Firing Pin out in Hinton allows FA..........

At the Duncan range, you just need to sign up...i did it here in Lawton...Cache Creek Flyshop by the mall was where i signed up...pretty darn easy
like the other range, it is pretty simple: drive up, open the gate, drive in, close the gate, and then get crazy with the cheeze-whiz!!

No, you don't need to know a member. Anyone can join. All members are givin a key to the gate to come and go as they please. They have ranges from 25yds out to 300yds. Sometimes a little crowded on weekends, but if you go on a weekday you will probably have the place to yourself. Dues are $50/year ($48/year for NRA members). Range is located on the south end of Duncan lake (about 10 miles east of Duncan). Contact club president Larry Waldroup @ (580) 252-2276 for more info.

Thank you for the information. It would be worth it to drive down. Especially on a week day. I will contact Mr. Waldroup.

$35 for the first year $25 a year after. The range is north on 81 to Great Lake Rd. Go West to the 2nd. dirt road then back south about 3/4 miles. You can get a app. at Bill's or you can get one at the meeting. The meeting that most people go to re-up is the first Monday in March at 8PM at the Hoover Building Garfield County Fairgrounds Monday March 6 and May 1.

I can solve that problem for ya. Just trade me that ol' 16 of yours for a pistol caliber subgun (my MK-760 9mm for instance) and you can shoot just about anywhere.

:thumb: Hehehehe...I'll keep the "problem" for now but thanks for the offer. I am thinking about getting a Ciener 22 conversion to play around with. Maybe that will help. I have the M11/9 for subgun fun.
