I just purchased a Mossberg 835 and was wondering what is the best load for turkey hunting. I have never turkey hunted, but I have hunted just about all other game birds. This Mossberg will handle 3.5 inch monsters, so this is what I will probably need. I would like to know what ammo and what choke you guys prefer. Oh, I have the 28" barrel. Thanks!!!

glocker, i have hunted eastern birds for years. a rem 3"mag full choke with federal copper plated #4 serves me well.i don't lose birds. with the 3.5 in. you may do better with #6 shot.depends on your pattern at no less than 40 yrds.also rio grande birds may be different than eastern.these boys are tough.

I finally got to shoot a few rounds through my 835 today. I purchased the Mossberg Ulti-full choke for it. I shot 3.5" turkey loads in #6 lead shot.

Federal Magnum Turkey Flitecontrol
Remington Premier Magnum Turkey
Winchester Double X Magnum Turkey

It was cold so I only shot at 30 yards. The Federal and Remington had about the same pattern. They both had a good tight pattern at 30 yards, a sure turkey killer. The Winchester had a less dense pattern, but would still work. All 3 loads recoiled about the same; they let you know you have pulled the trigger!!!! I think the Federal and Remington will still be good at longer than 30 yards. Next time I go shoot I am going to shoot them at different ranges, probably 10-40 yards and see how that goes.

Thanks for the replies!!!

As you probably know, in spring you have to use scatterguns or a bow. In the fall you can use centerfire rifles and hundguns. You can also use the following rimfires-.22 Magnum, 5mm Magnum, .17 HMR.

Jerms, have you tried any of the Hornady LeverEvolution ammo? I just purchased some of the 30-30 but I haven't shot any of it yet.

Give us the results, Glocker. A lot of people here shoot a 30-30, myself included. I have seen the ammo on the shelf, but have yet to try it.
