Release Recommended For Man Who Shot Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Deputy
LEXINGTON, Okla. (AP) -- The state's Pardon and Parole Board recommends early release for a man who shot an Oklahoma County sheriff's deputy in the face during a drug raid.
Robert Lee Young has served 18 years of a 60-year sentence for the shooting.
The parole board Monday recommended the 41-year-old be released after completing substance abuse training and spending four months in a community corrections center.
Young shot Deputy Robert Jim Manger in the nose while Manger and six other deputies were serving a search warrant at a northeast Oklahoma City apartment building in 1987.
Young says he had a gun but that he tripped, causing it to fire.
He was recommended for parole in 2002, but was denied by the governor.
