Does anyone have a schedule (time, date, location) of the local IDPA/IPSC matches? I'd like to come watch a couple.

check www.tulsashooters.com under the Red Castle and Oil capital sections.

Oh yeah....and you can't come watch. You have to shoot. ;)

Does it cost anything to come watch? I think I'd like to at least watch one of each to get a feel for how it all plays out so I'd be a little more comfortable the first time I want to compete.

It doesn't cost anything to watch but you will want to shoot.
If you don't shoot, you'll be kicking yourself in the ass about 5 minutes into it.
Trust me on this!!!!

It's not that big of deal really,we're all just a bunch of losers with nothing better to do.None of us are superstars.
Well....except for Junior DVC.

Everyone is always more than willing to help a newbie out because we like introducing people to the game.
It's very laid back.

How much does it cost to enter?

I have a 12yr old son, could he enter also and use my gun so we could both shoot?

Local match fees run $15; OC IDPA is $8. Youngesters are okay, but MUST be safe gun handlers. I encourage the kids to shoot lower-recoiling guns, since they are still growing. 9mm is good choice to keep from potentially injuring them. I'd say 13-14 may be a better age to start competition, but kids mature differently; depends on the kid and their skills.

Come out to Red Castle next Saturday and bring your gear. New shooters are given a lot of slack on thier first match. No concealment is required, you start from a low ready if you want. I also tell people to walk through the stage the first time out instead of trying to go fast. This allows you to learn the range commands etc. Speed will come later. Learn to be smooth first. It's a lot more fun and informative if you shoot instead of watch. You'll love it, I promise.

Haha why didn't they tell us that earlier JP...

I've seen some really young kids shooting before.
Probably the youngest was around 7 shooting a revo.

You can share a gun, inform your safety officer that you are going to do so and they will help/watch you trade the gun with each other.

Just make sure that your son (and you as well) know to keep the gun pointed downrange at all times and to have your finger off the trigger when moving and you will be fine. It's very addicting, hope to shoot with you and your son.

We may do that, will have to see how the schedule for the next week pans out.

He's only 12, but is within 2" height and 5-10 lbs. of me, and of course I'm a giant (5'6", 135 lbs)(just call me Yao). I'd say he's put almost as many rounds through my 1911 as I have, including rapid-fire, one-handed, etc. He's shot glock, ruger, h&k, beretta, 12g, mini-14 and an AR. I'm sure there are a few more, thats all I can remember off the top of my head. He practices safe trigger control and gun handling, even with toy guns. I wouldn't have mentioned it if I didn't think he could do it...and do it safely.

We'll see how this week goes. Regardless, we'll make it out there soon and give it a spin. Thanks for the info guys.

Local match fees run $15; OC IDPA is $8.

Whats the difference? What's OC? Is USPSA the same kind of pricing?

Hi guys. I'm brand spankin' new! Just wanted to say hey. I'm kinda embarrassed to say this but, I've never been to an IDPA shoot but I am dying to go to one. When is the next one in either Tulsa or OKC?

Cool. I'm gonna try to make it. Any big no-no's on gear? I'm a cop and I was just gonna use my duty gear - A Blackhawk CQC Serpa holster, CQC mag pouches and Glock 22. I know the mag pouch has to cover 1/2 of the mag? Is that correct? And the holster has an internal retention device (Serpa) no thumb break. Is that accepted?:lookaroun

IDPA specifically allows police duty rigs for LEO's. You get to use all its safety features and get to leave all the normal gear on it for the match. That way you get even more familiar with your daily carry.

Cool! That's good to know. Otherwise, O would probably use either my Fobus holster and mag pouch or my Glock "factory" holster and mag pouches.
