Not wanting to hijack the noob questions thread, so here it is.
I had no idea that these events were so noobie friendly. When is the next event that a noobie/couple of noobies could attend/watch? I have been interested in this for quite a while, but just never came around to finding out enough to go to one.

edit: I just seen the Oil Capital 27May06 date! Can anyone go to this? Where is this located? Is there anymore?

In Tulsa area there are two IDPA matches a month.
the 3rd Sat of the month is at Red Castle in Sand Springs and the 4th Saturday is at Oil Capital.
I'll probably be at Oil Capital on the 27th.
F16Mickey will probably be there as well as Eric Fuson,Jayjr,Tams72,John Zane,Razzy,TulsaGunGuy,Buzzdraw, maybe Mike Brown....and a few more.

Is there a caliber of choice for these IDPA matches or is it just preference?

Here is link to IDPA rulebook http://www.idpa.com/Documents/IDPARuleBook2005.pdf This link takes you to a local website that has maps to Oil Capital(OC) and Red Castle(RC) http://www.tulsashooters.com/

You are most certainly welcome to come spectate this Saturday at Oil Capital. Bring eye and ear protection. Ask questions if you want. Both OC and RC start sign in around 9-9:30 AM and have walk-thru (courses of fire explained) at 10 AM. Both normally finish up six stages/100 rounds by around 2 PM. You can get home in plenty of time to mow grass, wash truck, take spouse out to dinner, and whatever else you do on Saturday.

The two dominant IDPA calibers are 9mm and .45ACP. Also in use are .40 S&W, .38 Super, and others. The caliber and action type determine into which divison your particular pistol will fall. Lots of 1911 types (in .45, .38, & 9mm), plenty of Glocks, and a good variety of other makers represented. Everyone from Master-level to Novices come and have fun.

 J/K! I just plan on watching to get a feel for things. So how will I be able to recognize you guys so I can step up and say Hi? Or will I be sticking out like a sore thumb (being the only one there not carrying/competeing)?

It's usually one or the other.
Mixing Alcohol and hypnotic sedatives is not generally the best course of action,my friend.

If you just "come to watch",you suck in the biggest way possible!
don't be a puss....bring your gear and shoot.
If you don't have enough gear, squad up with me and we can share mine.
You can recognize me easily.
I'll probably be wearing an offensive t-shirt,black vest, bandana worn Suicidal style (Local translation: Headband style, low over the eyebrows),earrings and spikey bleach blond hair.
Additionally,I'm a flagrant smartass so I usually stand out from the crowd.
I'm usually standing with my local circle, regaling them with my tales of the previous night's debauchery. :)

Just kidding (but not really)

Haha. Well, I don't think we're shooting IDPA anymore... at least probably not untill nationals. We're more geared towards USPSA now.

But JP, if you wanna play, come out to USPSA just about anywhere in our bordering states and I'll be there.

The daddio is faster and more accurate, gotta be better all around to get close.

JP, I know it's going to be really hard for you... I think you can do it.
You won't have to tell people "I got beat by a 16 year old today(and last time)" anymore. :P

We might show up at some IDPA if there is absolutely nothing else going on and we don't feel like practicing...

just remember... WWJJRD :D

Yeah, I shoot a 34. For this year... next year I hope to start shooting Open.

If anyone going is still awake? OK, so sign in is around 9-9:30. What time does everyone get there? A little early or right around sign in? What fees can I expect to pay? Being out there for approx. 4 hours is there beverages on hand? Do I need to bring my own? Cooler? Do we break for lunch? Is lunch on hand? I'm bringing the wife, so is there seating? Do I bring my own seating? How much ammo do I need to bring? Sorry for posting last min. questions at nearly midnight. I've been super busy. At first I was going, then not going, and now and lastly going!

Show up about 9:30
Match fee at OC is $8
the bring water coolers to each bay when it's hot like this but you can bring your own.
Definitely bring a snack because you're there from 9:30 until about 2:00pm
They don't formally break for lunch but the matches move slow enough for you to stand around and munch.
There is seating available but if she wants to sit up close, bringing a chair would be a good idea....and an umbrella....and sunscreen.....it's gonna' be a scorcher!
