1911Sooner,

How would you rate the different makers of the 1911? Colt vs Springfield vs Kimber and so on. What "brand" would you stay away from in the 1911 .45?

Anybody else want to rate them???

Thanks

That's an excellent question... I would be interested as well.

I have shot a bunch of them and just going with non custom guns like Ed Brown and Wilson Combat and the likes I would rate Springfield Armory the best without question. Lifetime warranty and above and beyond customer service. I own more SA's than any other. They are a bargain and regarless of price they shoot with any other. There is a reason why the FBI chose them as their pistol. I also like Dan Wesson quite a bit. DW's use a lot of Ed Brown parts and are also a bargain. Believe it or not I don't like Colts at all. The two I own have been the most problematic and I despise 80 series and that is mostly what Colt has. Kimber is also kind of shakey right now and would not buy a new Kimber unless it had an internal extractor as their externals are failing left and right.

I've never been a huge 1911 fan, but that first pic definately has the hotness.

I'll rate them too, of the big makers I'll say Colt hands down with SA having the best true Mil-spec for the money. Colt's Gov is better built IMHO but everyone wants $800 for them. You basically reverse Sooner's experience with Colt and SA and you get mine. The only 1911 that I've owned from SA that worked well was a mil-spec and now I really wish I hadn't sold it. I had a couple of Kimbers and had no problems with them, I just started having a better eye for quality and I couldn't justify the price of a Kimber. It's really hard to go wrong with all the choices now SA, S&W, Colt, Kimber, Para etc...

As with my experience with the Semi-Customs.... The STI Trojan is the best 1911 you can buy under $1k IMHO, YMMV but many agree on this. No way I'd buy a Wilson (see Kimber, which is where they get their slides)...My choices would be Les Baer, Ed Brown, or my favorite from right here in Claremore Ok, Nowlin ( the only maker of any of these to sweep the Bianchi Cup) I've not handled a RRA or Nighthawk but everyone seems to like them.

If anyone wants to try 1911s but doesn't want to spend a lot of money try an Rock Island Armory they can be had for $290+shipping and don't give up a ton to the SA Mil-spec in the fit and finish dept. If anyone has any doubts head over to 1911 forums and see all the 1911 gurus that are please with theirs, it's an overwhelming majority.

Yeah the Rock Islands are pretty reliable from what I hear. The are made in the Phillipenes and use cast frames and slides instead of forged. But for $300 should be pretty good.

To me it's splitting hairs since SA's Milspec is assembled in Brazil from what I understand. I really wish they were $375 like they used to be.

Flyboy, mine is the exact same model and I love it as well. I hear prices on the Dan Wessons are going up about $200 per gun.
