I've been thinking of getting a new stock for the 870. Sage international makes a very nice (expensive) collapsible stock that I've been seriously looking at. Advanced Technology makes the top folder. I'm not an officer or anything so the odds of the gun seeing a life or death situation are very slim. It lives next to my bed. Just wondering what you guys would put on your gun and why. I'm leaning towards the Sage, but would like some opinions or experiences on either stock.

The only experience I have had is with an 870 with a top folding stock. IMO If you are going to use it solely for home defense then that would probably be fine. If you plan on taking it out of the house for any distance shooting ( over 15-20 yards) then honestly consider keeping the stock you have. The folder I had at work punished you when you shoulder-fired it.

Neither.
IMO, the fixed stock is always the best option on a defense shotgun, unless the stock doesn't fit you. In that case, get a shorter fixed stock.

Thanks for the input guys. The only real reason, other than cool factor, that I wanted a new stock was that I find the straight pistol grip much more comfortable.

I put a collapsible stock on my 870. I don't think it really added much of any benefit or harm. The tacticoolness factor went through the roof. For whatever reason, everybody at the range wants to shoot it.
What about the speedfeed stocks? Are those good for defense shotguns?

Did you get the Sage stock or the AR-style?
I've heard one problem with the speedfeed stocks is that the shells pop out pretty easily.

I had the AR style.
I was wondering how easily the shells came out.
