View Full Version : Some IDPA Questions

I am considering doing the whole IDPA thing, so here are a few questions I have:
First, classification match. Is that the first step of shooting I would be doing?
What is the COF like? Does it change from month to month, or is it the same all of the time?
Ammo. What is my best bet for ammo, I will be using a G17.
How many rounds will I be firing in each match.
How long does it take for a match, and how long is my actual shooting time? Can I just shoot my COF and then leave, or do you do it in stages?
Rules. After reading through the rules, it talks about the holster. From what I understand the gun is to be concealed when not firing. Will my C.T.A.C. work as my holster?
Any help and other general information would be appreciated.
Be at Red Castle Gun Club Saturday the 19th @ about 9:00 with 150 rounds(max) of cheap Blazer ammo or what ever. a pistol, holster, 2 mag pouches and some water(drinking). 10.00 for members & 15.00 for nonmembers. Your 1st match you will not have to worry about concealment, heck you can even start the string from the low ready if you want. Courses of fire change every month. There will be 6 stages and will take about 3 hours to shoot the match. We split up into squads and move from stage to stage. Just come out and dive in, you will be glad you did. Here is a link that will give a gate code to get in a day or so before the match. http://www.tulsashooters.com/

You are supposed to have joined IDPA and shot the Classifier before your 2nd match. Classifiers aren't always available every month, so sometimes you get to shoot more than 1 match as a non-member. The IDPA Classifier Match is posted on the IDPA Official web; it does not change. The COF at monthly matches DOES change with every match; typically 6 different stages for about 100 rounds. For 9mm ammo to start with, go to Academy Sports and buy the aluminum-cased Blaser FMJ stuff; about $5/50 rd. Area matches (see link: http://www.tulsashooters.com/ ) have sign-in at 9:30 AM and 10 AM walk-thru (COF explained to all competitors at once by match director.) Shooters are divided in squads who move as a group to shoot the stages. Matches are normally finished up around 2 PM, with scores calculated shortly afterwards. A CTAC fits the bill for a holster, under IDPA rules.

Don't "consider" it,just DO it. ;)
Just come out and shoot a match.
You can still shoot but you will be "unclassified" until you have a chance to shoot a classifier.
The classifier is always the same with standard stages like the "El Presidente"
but actual matches vary.
CCI Blazer from Academy is the cheapest way to go for 9mm.
We all shoot Blazer or WWB from Wal-Mart.(I prefer Blazer)
Usually a match is about 85rd.
I bring 150rd just in case.......hey,you never know.
Some stages might call for 6 rounds total and others might call for 12-18rd.
Matches generally start signing up around 9:00am-ish and shooting starts around 10:00am-ish.
A typical match is over by 1:00pm or 2:00pm depending on how many shooters turn out.
The number is usually somewhere around 30 shooters for a local match.
Your actual shooting time on a stage will vary from 3 seconds to say 50 seconds.
You shoot in squads.
Every shooter in the squad gets their turn until they have all completed the stage. Then, that squad moves on to the next stage...and so on.
Your CTAC will work just fine.
You can make equipment adjustments later depending on what you want to get out of the sport.
Me? I'm a gamer. :)

Thanks for all of the info. When the weather cools off I will defenatly be doing it, but I have decided to shoot with my G23. I figure that it is for "defensive" shooting so I should shoot what I carry. I will probably go get me a fobus paddle holster and double mag carrier also.

Well, see you are going about it all wrong........
If you want to "win" you are better served with gamer gear.
If you want to use your defensive setup, you know damn well you are not going to carry in a Fobus.
:rollingla
Carry in your duty rig.
:anyone:
Shoot IDPA with a 9mm...it's cheaper and easier to learn when just starting out.

Can I use my duty gear? Belt leather holster and leather mag holders?
Can I use my duty gear? Belt leather holster and leather mag holders?
Yes. LEOs can use their duty gear HOWEVER......they must use ALL of their duty gear including cuffs, baton, etc. but they also have the exception to the "concealment" rule.
Lance Jensen, who is a member here, shoots IDPA w/ me all the time and he shoots from a full retention duty rig.
He beat me this wek.

Hey! *I* carry my G19 in a Fobus paddle, during the late fall/winter when I can wear a wind-breaker over the holster! Other times I wear a cheap leather IWB....

Very poor choice of holster for carry,IMO.
The "cheap" leather IWB might be more secure.

Well, I've only been carrying since November and don't claim to be an expert. It suits me, though. The fobus has a nice solid "click" when holstered and doesn't worry me in the slightest with regards to accidental unholstering or discharge.
Why don't you like it?

I dont think its the accidental discharge or accidental unholstering on YOUR side that is bad. There is a video clip around here somewhere of why you dont want to use a fobus holster. I wouldnt want to roll around on the ground with one either. They are not the most durable made holster made. Probably one of the worst for taking impacts

While normally I would resist a thread drift :lookaroun TSquare has yet to get the cajones to show up at a match. :nutkick:
The Fobus is not durable enough in a struggle which is something that should strongly be considered.
They can be ripped apart.
I'm sure there is a certain moderator here that would be glad to demonstrate this to you. :)
