View Full Version : Why aren't revolvers as popular?

Is it the "more is better" mentality, are they just too "old fashioned" ?

I prefer the craftsmanship of a well built revolver. The flutes in the cylinder,
the checkering of the hammer and the cylinder release, the groves on top of
the barrel and down the backstrap, the stamping in the stainless steel.
When I pickup my 66 it feels like a solid dependable instrument and "only"
having 6 .357's at my disposal doesn't worry me one bit.And call me crazy
but I think wheelguns look better than autos.

Am I wrong here? :anyone: Opinions anyone?

I think it's both. Most of the younger shooters I know, don't have much interest in revolvers. I don't personally feel that way, but to each his own.

I have never owned a revolver, but am now wanting one. Something inexpensive for target shooting. Any suggestions?

A Ruger GP100 or a S&W model 66 or 19 are both great revolvers.
You can probably find an older Rossi for cheap and some are great accurate reliable beaters.
Colt King cobras can be had around $450.
Or you could splurge and find a S&W 3-4" M27!!! :)
Personally I like wheelguns better than autos, especially the S&W stuff but frankly, they just don't cut the mustard these days,IMO.
Shoot a match and you'll quickly see the disadvantages of a revolver.
Having said that, the average gunfight consists of what....3-4 shots?
IDPA matches are not reality but still...it makes you think *what if ?*.
I just need fast guns that are lightweight, can take major abuse, and carry a lot of ammo. That's why I choose SIG and especially Glock.
Still,I always like j-frames as a pocket gun or a backup gun.

Oh yeah..I also like N-frame snubbies though I don't have anymore left.

I've seen pics of M29 snubbies, I can only imagine the flame that must come out of
that thing when shooting full house magnums.

My favorite snubbies are 3" K frames, very versitile weapon.

Saddly it looks like revolvers are a dying breed although I still want an 8 shot 627 too bad they are only PC guns.

Is this any good? I don't need it for carry or defense. I've never had a revolver and just want something cheap for occasional range use.

ruger or s&w, dont mess with anything else.
a gp100 stainless would be my choice, but i like ruger revolvers.
and about revolvers.
i like them alot, i have always liked them. i have bought a few semis, but i cant seem to find one i like.
someone said to me once they felt revolvers were for women.
who was it? i forget, someone on the GTokie forum.......
i thought to self "gee, a smith model 29 .44mag with an 8" barrel is the perfect handcannon for your avg. female."
you give up capacity with one, but with a 357 or a 44 youre not undergunned if you can get good placement, placement, and placement.
right?
ive been toying with the idea of getting into a 327 smith, an 8 shot snubby 357. you get the best of both worlds. but with that short barrel i think id be running the 135gr speer +p 38special to be honest.

hefty price tag though.

If you want a range gun get a 4" or 6" barrel much better sight radius than
a snubbie. Somthing like a S&W 10, 64, 15, 67, 19, 66, 13, 65 (those are the
model numbers) also don't rule out .22 revos like the 17 and 617. In a Ruger
you will be looking for a Service Six or a Security Six. Or if you have a lot of
money you want to burn look for a Colt Diamondback. These are just some
ideas, do some research (gun range rentals) and find yourself a revolver that
you really like.

are using it for strictly range or home get a 4" barrel. The Rossi stuff is hit or miss but I've had some very good ones in the past.
Keep an eye out for a S&W model 65 or 66

QUOTE]

I had a 3" 629 and a 3" 657 (both Lew horton models)
The full house rounds in either caliber were definitely 'shock and awe'.
You could load down to .44special and .41 special.{cut the .41 mag case down to 44spec length and download it}
My favorite 44mag load was actually the Keith load,a hot 240gr SWC 44special.
A similar round in the .41 proved to be very accurate.

I still long for a K-comp

k comp?
im not at all familiar with this model, other than the pic you posted.
what is it exactly, mfg dates? specs?

J.P.
06-19-2005, 06:22 PM
I can't recall the mfg. dates.you can find out over on the S&W fourm.
It Was a Performance Center/Lew Horton gun. a 3",matte black model 19with Trijicon front sight and power ported.
PC triggerwork and overtravel stop....Recessed chambers too (i think.)

in my humble opinion, it's all about the round count...

Combat Magnum

My opinion is if 6 .357's won't get the job done I should probably have something
like an M468.

At the IDPA match this weekend,Curt Nichols shot the course in something like 94 seconds with a wheelgun!
It can be done.
(I shot it in 131 with a G19,and Michael Brown shot it in 77 w/ a Glock.)

Combat Magnum

What wheelgun was he using?

J.P.
07-01-2005, 05:18 AM
I'm not sure.
Maybe a 610?
I was in a different squad so I only got to see him shoot one quick stage.

Combat Magnum

610's are cool, I'd like to have one but no $$$.

Michael Brown
07-01-2005, 10:36 AM
Curt was shooting a model 19.

A good shooter with a cool head can produce good results. If its what you like for whatever reason, that's what you should use. However its tactical disadvantages must be considered.

FWIW, Jim Cirillo has probably won more gunfights with a revolver than any other man alive. He carries a Glock today and says he would carry a Glock if he were still a police officer.

Something to consider.

Sure it was a 19?
Was it nickel plated?

Michael Brown
07-01-2005, 05:23 PM
Yup nickel-plated 19.I even fondled it this morning when I was picking up my model 10 from him.

He's alternating between that 19 and a 15 I loaned him for this IDPA season.

That's the other big weakness of revolvers. If you are a high volume shooter, they won't last as long without parts replacement. Revolvers are more tolerent of neglect than semi-autos but modern semi-autos (Glocks, Sigs, HK's) are much more durable.

Ah ha!
I knew it was silver buy I just assumed it was a 66 or 610 or something like that.
I mean afterall,who shoots a M19 in IDPA?
I guess only the best. ;)

I don't personally own a revolver but I still think they are very nice. Yes they are a a dying breed but you can blame that on hollywood. All the Desperado/John Woo films with hundreds of rounds being exchanged between two people seem to leave an impression on people that 6 wont get it done.

I love the clicking noise the cylinder makes and the feel of a good solid revolver. They feel like tanks and can take a beating like no ones buisness. I just personally haven't found one that I'd like to buy yet.

Though I considered that hammerless snubby S&W (model number escapes me) with the laser installed as a carry piece.

Also on a off-topic...Why can you qualify for a CCW with a Semi and carry a revolver concealed but if you qualify with a revolver you can't carry a semi? That makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever..someone please explain.....

J.P.
07-08-2005, 01:48 PM
Because revolvers have a different manual of arms that some people cannot cope with safely.

Still doesn't make sense though. I mean I can fire a semi and I am automatically qualified to shoot a revolver but if I fire a revolver I am not qualified on a semi?

I'd think that due to the differences you mentioned you'd get qualified for both not matter which one you shot at class. Sorry for the thread hijack.

There is something about a nice .357 that just makes me smile. The best I had was a early 1950's made M28 in perfect shape that I bought for $200. Like a fool, I sold it to buy something shiny. My main revolver now is the M66, I carry it when I'm in the yard.

Of course i meant to say "semi-auto" instead of revolvers.
Ooops
