Can't wait myself. With the cool mornings I saw a good sized buck hanging around my feed plot. I've got some pretty good sized doe as well. Turkey sure are thick around here too.

Watched a doe and fawn feeding 2 nights ago. I just sat down and watched them for 20 min.
Last night I started going thru my hunting cloths to see what I have and what I need to replace.
Needless to say, I am ready.

I was thinking more along the lines of loving the smell of field dressing a deer as far as victory goes but.... deer urine works :thumb:

Some people would view us as sick.. Here we are just about to die with anticipation to get up before daylight and sit in a tree for many hours hoping to kill a deer. lol will they ever understand the madness lol

You are correct!
A groups of us (as many as 12 at any time) spend a week during black powder and 2 weeks during gun in the woods chasing deer. During the off season, we spend a good deal of our free time getting ready.

Any of you guys ever hunt with a pistol? I'm no deer hunter, but I did go once...baged a 110lb spike with a S&W 629 .44 magnum. I don't enjoying killing things just for sh!ts and grins. If I liked the meat, it would be different. Just not redneck enough I guess...I don't even watch NASCAR. :lookaroun

I usually carry a 44mag with me incase I get a close shot but so far all mine have been taken with a rifle.

Well, I was within 75 yards...so yeah, it was pretty close. Dropped him like a bad habit. I think he may have flinched just before he went THUD!!! I hit him with a Hornady 300gr XTP. Exit wound about the size of your fist.

From your first post, we eat the deer we shoot. The deer I took last season has kept us in ground beef and sausage all year.

I took my first doe last week. Okay, my first deer ever last week. She dressed out at 88 lbs. I like this archery thing. It is pretty challenging, but I ain't too shabby at it. I had deer chili last night again. I think I will make a roast this week. I hope the owner invites me back to take a buck. There are several nice ones. By the way, there ought to be open season on poachers. Poachers, litterbugs and people who throw cigarettes out are all vermin scum who should have a big red target on their back.

Awesome. Nothing like your first deer!!
I wasn't nervous. I just remembered breathe in, breathe out and all went well. She ran 50 yards, but in a half circle so she was only 25 yards from where I shot her. I am ready to go again! I also want to try my hand at a turkey with a bow.

I'm still trying to get a turkey with a gun!! Actually I only hunted last turkey season; but after calling in a couple birds I really want one.
I want to get one and then fry it up! Mmmmm, fried turkey.

Have an automatic feeder about 130 yds from my deck. Earlier this evening, had 3 doe and a nice 8 pt buck. Couple of weeks ago had a 12 pt hanging around. Usually take 1 or 2 just to have the meat, but would much rather spend my time calling coyotes. Jim

this is true. i was only able to hunt friday evening, saturday morning/evening and sunday morning this week but my fatherinlaw and a couple other guys at camp were shooting them around that 9am-11am timeframe. the place i'm hunting at is about 200 or so miles from home. if i had some public land or something closer i'd for sure go out this weekend and see what i could do. =]
oh, and i'll be staying in the tree longer next time as well. gettin down at 11ish turned out to be a bad idea, i'd probably have had better luck otherwise. =]
I am going again the 10th through the 12th in Antlers. I am fired up! I would like to get another doe for the meat. I will have this one processed though. That is a lot of work and I would like to turn a bunch into sausage and jerky. Mmmm... jerky.
rlt7272
10-31-2006, 05:50 PM
I just got back from Antlers, from what I saw and the locals I talked to the deer there are not quite in rut yet so you should be in good shape when you go. That is assuming it is not 70 degrees and sunny like it was this weekend.
oneshotonekill
10-31-2006, 09:15 PM
Yeah if it will get cold it should be so fun this weekend. pre rut is the best. take some golden estrous out there and find grandad deer just a lil to frisky for his own good.
It should be plenty cold this weekend and next. Every time that I think of one of those scents, I think of the video where the buck attacks the hunter who drenched himself with it. Too bad he died, the video was funny. Any of you guys use a scent blocker?
rlt7272
11-02-2006, 08:32 AM
I do not use scent blocker, just try and move around to position myself facing the wind. Also use the fresh earth spray cover scent. I prefer to use skunk as a cover when I can find it. I haven't been able to locate a bottle in a couple of years.
YukonGlocker
11-02-2006, 09:40 AM
I have had good luck using the scent/UV blocking detergents, soap, and deodorant. I will then spray lightly with scent blocker right before heading into the woods. I have been amazingly close to many deer doing this.

HiImSeth
11-02-2006, 11:56 AM
Tree stands? I do.
rlt7272
11-02-2006, 01:42 PM
Gave up my stands a couple of years ago. Now use ground blind and a blind on my ATV
HiImSeth
11-02-2006, 02:55 PM
What would you consider the advantages/disadvantages of ground blind/atvblind opposed to tree stands?
oneshotonekill
11-02-2006, 04:04 PM
I use the fresh earth cover spray as well with a lil raccoon urine to help out. As far as blinds vs. stands i prefer stands or a blind that i can leave in position. i have noticed in my experience that just throwing a blind up sometimes makes the deer skittish. i have one blind that i leave out all seasona and that works well
brennan
11-02-2006, 06:25 PM
How high do you set your tree stands?
oneshotonekill
11-02-2006, 07:25 PM
Being in southeastern oklahoma i try to set them as high as the tree will allow. Though i feel 15ft is a minimum for most applications.
HiImSeth
11-02-2006, 09:45 PM
yeah mine are usually 15-20ft
Okiewhitetail
11-02-2006, 11:35 PM
I use both i have 2 climbers one G-30 Hub blind and a few home made jobbers. They are all nice.
Semi 1. 12 pointer-0. Friend of mine lost a 12 pointer to the side door of a semi. Horns were stuck in the door and they still had to shoot the deer. This coming weekend should be a good one with the front coming through.
oneshotonekill
11-06-2006, 11:45 AM
lol dang trucks kill all my deer. well i cant wait for this weekend the moon should be getting smaller and with the front bowhunting should be amazing might even get enough wind to do some stalking. :thumb: :thumb:
Came back from Antlers. Nada. It was so daggone windy that the deer laid down. Saw one piece of crap spike. I should have taken him out just to remove him from the gene pool. The other guys saw 8 turkeys! Aaargh! They only saw two does and one 8 point. One guy shot the buck and just injured him. We tracked for over half a mile and couldn't find him. I am going to Boggy River Ranch in December. I will take my bow and rifle.
oneshotonekill
11-16-2006, 11:01 AM
Yeah the wind does that everytime but its great if you have a general idea where they like to stay good good stalking weather. only thing you have to contend with is arrow flight in high wind. I hear they have been chasing pretty good so this cold snap ought to but them in into overdrive good luck everyone

I finally had time to go deer hunting on the last day of the late doe hunt (Dec. 31st) and shot a doe for the freezer; so now I'm happy. I haven't had much time lately due to work and being a single parent to a 3 yr. old. I can't wait 'til he gets older so I can take him hunting. I have some acreage of my own (18.5); and I see deer on a regular basis...mostly at night. I don't have alot of room to shoot because of neighboring houses. I did see a nice buck during the day that I could have shot just after Thanksgiving; but it was 4 days past the season. Oh well...I like the trailer by the way. I might look into a set-up like that. About how much do you have into it? Well only about 320 days 'til deer season.:bigeye:
