I purchased my first gun yesterday. I got myself a Springfield XD 9. I'll post some pics eventually. Now I just need to know where to go to practice shooting with the thing.

We want pics! If you lived in OKC, you could go to H&H, but I'm guessing you live in Tulsa, so I couln't help you there.

Have you found a place to shoot it yet??

Nice looking gun!

I've got the xdsc and I've been pleasantly happy with it so far.

What made you go with that model instead of a non-ported or sub compact or tactical version?

TULedHead

The ported model was cheaper than the non-ported model they had in stock. That is the main reason why I went with the V-10.

Could you explain the pros and cons of a ported gun? All that I've been told is that a ported gun helps reduce the recoil.

The XD was the most comfortable gun to hold. Much more comfy than the glock.

Crap. I did a little research and have seen a lot of negative things posted about ported pistols. It sounds as if they get dirty easier. I'm wondering if I should take mine back and get the non-ported one. Hmmm......

Any advice?

I don't think they will allow any returns on firearms.

I have a ported glock. It does get a little more dirty than my non-ported models, but it doesn't really bother me. I never shoot enough rounds before cleaning to let it cover the front sight.

Lots of people claim that ported guns are poor choices for defensive weapons. I think, if used properly, they are fine.

Pros- reduced recoil. IMO it makes it more comfortable to shoot and allows faster follow up shots.

Cons- purportedly they are louder, but I'm too deaf to tell. muzzleflash is greater, but It hasn't bothered me yet. many people claim that the upperward flame through the ports could cause injury to the shooter in a self defense situation.

I've owned 2 different ported guns and liked them both. If you like it, don't listen to the BS everyone talks about them. Shoot it safely and shoot it often.

Porting is not allowed in IDPA.
Blast from porting can cause eye injury if shooting from retention.

I personally do not prefer ported models.
If it were me (and it's not),I would return it an get the non-ported model.
there shouldn't be any problem since you haven't even fired it.

Where did you buy it at?

I've never been to Sports World. In OKC they are $439 for the V10 at Outdoor America . Do the shops in Tulsa have good prices on their new guns?

I have a 21C now and recently traded my 19C because I already had a regular 19.

Ok, heres the skinny on the ported models, from my expierience.
I own a G23c (ported compact 40 cal) and there is more muzzel flash, it does get dirtier, and if you carry it allot, you will get allot of lint and stuff in the porting. Should this concearn you, my opinion, no! The Tulsa Police Department have now switched all officers to Glock 22c, ported or compensated (same thing) modesl. So, as far as a self deffensive pistol, it is great. I bought a new xd40 in 4" today. Did not get ported because it cost more. Ported or Compensated models weigh fractions less than non ported or non compensated. But I really dont see a draw back to having one or not. You will be very happy with your XD purchase. My brother has the 3" 9mm, with thousands of rounds through it without a single malfunction or problem. I will be using mine as a duty weapon, and will fill totaly comfortable with it! I have noticed that since they introduced the xml mini light for the subs, that they have added another cut in the rail on the full sized guns to lock it into place. That was a needed addition because my last 9mm full size had one cut in the rail, and the mini light was too far to activate when locked into the cut.

J.P. is right about the retention problems.

I've done some drills at contact distance using IDPA targets. Your forehead against the "head" of the target and your weak hand holding the target's "shoulder". A magazine was fired from retention into the pelvis/stomach area of the target. I would not want to run that drill with a ported pistol that close to my face.

As far as range work I see no problems with em.
