I want to get a timer for training and was wondering if there was a concensus on the better ones out there.

So far, it seems that either a Pact MKIV would be my first choice, or one from Competitive Edge Dynamics (have to read more about these).

Anyone have good/bad to say? Other suggestions? I like the fetures listed here (taken from Pact site). But maybe the other timers have functions like this too....

From Pact Website:

If you've never trained with a timer, simply having the time of your last shot displayed will seem like a pretty neat deal. However, once you get rolling, you'll find you really want more from a timer. For example, say you're practicing something like an El Presidente. [3 IPSC targets at 10 yards, approximately 1 yard apart, edge to edge. Start back to the targets, on the buzzer turn and shoot 2 hits on each target, reload, and shoot 2 more hits on each target. ]

The critical split times are the first shot, the reload, and the total time... Shoot a run, look at your timer, you'll see the first shot and the total time displayed. To see your reload time press REVIEW, 7. The timer will jump to shot number seven and will automatically display the time of shot seven as well as the split time between the sixth and seventh shots - your reload time. Now, back to your practice... you'd like to improve your reload time... so you push the KEY button ("Keyed Beep" feature) and program the timer to beep 1.5 seconds after the sixth shot. Now, make another run. A separate internal clock will sound a beep 1.5 seconds after the sixth shot. Making a few more runs, you notice the beep comes just before the magazine gets to the well. As you continue to practice, you may find that you're getting the mag seated by the time you hear the beep.
You've just improved because the KEYED BEEP focuses your attention on a specific place in time. This is just one example of how the MKIV Championship Timer acts like your own shooting coach.

Unless you have a burning desire to be a champion IPSC/IDPA shooter, a PocketPro is best bet for the average trainee.

Its about $100 depending on what kind of deal you can find and does everything the average shooter could want.

Its also small and the buttons are large and easily manipulated which becomes suprisingly important.

It would be my recommendation.
