Is there such a thing as quail in Oklahoma anymore? the last time I went five years ago. We only kicked up 6 birds on one field and 8 on another.

Long gone are the times of big quail days in OK.

but if anyone has any good places lets hear.

Our farm in Waynoka had about 12 coveys of birds just 2 weeks ago. We are going out on opening weekend.

I've only seen 1 small covey in the yard this year. The fox's got most of them. I'm thinking raise the window and blast a few. Either that, or ruin the deer hunting in Cleo.

The western part of the state usually has some pretty good quail hunting close to the panhandle. The public land is very crowded for the first 2 or 3 weeks though.

I've got 2 pretty good sized coveys in my back pasture.:thumb: I used to hunt birds with dogs. Man you cannot beat that! Haven't had any bird dogs in 4 years or so though.

Is that an invite to hunt your back pasture?

I have a nice quail honey hole up near Vici. Sorry, I can't tell you where...

According to Wildlife Dept this year will be down considerably from last and last was down from average. There will still be many good hunting opportunities, mostly in the western half of the state. And even in bad years there are hot spots. Last year, on the last day I hunted near the end of the season, my GSP, Ike found about 150 birds including several large (30+) bird coveys. The pups in our group had a ball learning from him. If you are willing to travel to Kansas they are forecasting a great year and they have thousands of acres of public walk in hunting land. Last year they did better than Oklahoma on the Quail harvest.

Were you hunting in the western part of the state when you found those quail on the last day?

Went back to Greer County opening day. Only three small coveys. Also saw a Kansas Wildlife Dept blog where all the locals are saying the Dept is highly exaggerating the Pheasant and Quail population up there to bring in out of state people.

I live in the northeast near Kansas and Missouri. Quail are pretty much gone here. The Missouri Department of Conservation says the quail are gone up there and there are no plans to bring them back, as the habitat is all gone. When the ranchers go to the cultivated grasses there is nothing for the quail to eat. We do have good dove numbers.

I spend plenty of time outdoors and usually only see one or two coveys the whole year. I haven't been quail hunting in ten years. I guess I need to go to the southwest.
