View Full Version : Guns - At School & Work

As far as I'm aware, here's what I beleive to be true:
Work:
Guns may be taken to work, but must be left in your car and car must be locked. Correct?
School:
Guns are not allowed on school property in any way, shape form or fashion. Correct?
ASSuming both of those are true, I have a problem if I plan on doing the following... Once I obtain my license, I'll be working from 8:30 - 5:00. I then have classes at school at 5:30. This leaves me barely enough time to make it to class on time. Since guns aren't allowed on school property (even if they are in my vehicle) I'll be begging to get in trouble if I take my gun and leave it in my car while at work and do the same while in class. Hopefully this made sense.
Just want some clarifiction on this and to make sure I'm understanding it correctly because I DO NOT wanna face any legal troubles.

Assuming you do not work at a place specifically barred by the SDA you can carry at work if you please. If its against company policy you could get fired thats up to you to decide if its worth it.
K-12 schools are off limits unless you are in your vehicle picking up a child. I'm pretty sure you can leave it in your car on college campuses in the parking lots. You can also get permission from the president of the school to carry.
I am not 100% sure on the school.

For what it's worth, I work at Met Life in Tulsa. From the way you wrote your reply, I read it as if you're legally (as long as your workplace isn't barred by the SDA) licensed to carry, you may carry INTO your workplace. Am I reading that correctly? And as far as I know, Met Life isn't barred by the SDA, but I will look into that as well as our company policy.
I also attend Northeastern State University's Broken Arrow campus. I will look more into laws concerning college campuses and will report back with my findings.

OK-SDA
UNLAWFUL CARRY IN CERTAIN PLACES
D. No person in possession of any concealed handgun pursuant to the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act shall be authorized to carry the handgun into or upon any college or university property, except as provided in this subsection. For purposes of this subsection, the following property shall not be prohibited for persons having a valid concealed handgun license:
1. Any property set aside for the use of any vehicle, whether attended or unattended, provided the handgun is carried or stored as required by law and the handgun is not removed from the vehicle without the prior consent of the college or university president while the vehicle is on any college or university property;
2. Any property authorized for possession or use of handguns by college or university policy;
3. Any property authorized by the written consent of the college or university president, provided the written consent is carried with the handgun and the valid concealed handgun license while on college or university property.
The college or university may notify the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation within ten (10) days of a violation of any provision of this subsection by a licensee. Upon receipt of a written notification of violation, the Bureau shall give a reasonable notice to the licensee and hold a hearing. At the hearing upon a determination that the licensee has violated any provision of this subsection, the licensee may be subject to an administrative fine of Two Hundred Fifty Dollars ($250.00) and may have the concealed handgun license suspended for three (3) months.
Nothing contained in any provision of this subsection shall be construed to limit the authority of any college or university in this state from taking administrative action against any student for any violation of any provision of this subsection.
Pertaining to my case/question(s)... I beleive that I may carry my gun onto NSU-BA's parking lot and leave it there while in class. Correct... can someone verify that this is true for me? Michael?
correct, you can leave the firearm in your car at school.
At work, usually the "Don't ask,Don't tell" policy is best.
If they haven't spelled out a firearms policy already, then why push the issue and make them spell it out?
The only people that ever get in trouble are the ones that blabber about it.

If you aren't comfortable with the school thing. You might consider a next door park lot. I've parked at a neighboring business on several occassions. It may or may not be needed, but it makes me more comfortable when in doubt.

Good idea. But have you ever been to the NSU-BA campus? It's the only thing out there. No other parking lots within 5 minutes, driving time. Eeek!!
JP, thanks for the advice.

my personal feeling is why do you need to wear your gun (into)work?the college campus shouldnt be a problem, check with them.
i was at OCPD for a 2 day class and really was thinking about wearing my FA and thought why do i want to lug that thing around on my hip,handcuffs,ammo,badge-maybe its my age.
have fun shooting

If you are a police officer, the reason is responsibility.
If you are not, three words: Columbine High School.
I think those are pretty good reasons to wear a firearm any time you can.
If carrying a firearm were an issue of averages and percentages, there would be no reason to carry a firearm at all. We carry for those unlikely times that affect us for the rest of our lives.

i know a lot of guys on here want to carry their guns,i have no problem with that.just remember the liability and what it takes to use a FA.most on here havent been in shooting situations or used a firearm to try to kill someone.there is a lot to consider and facing those demons that come about from using one can haunt you for a long time.

I work as a consultant and travel too many different job related locations (offices, etc.). I always go armed.
The little "No Guns" sticker is only a request. The only charge you face is trespassing if you violate it.
It is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Having a gun is not a mandate to take action.
Its just that its pretty hard to do so if you don't have one.
I say always carry.

Mike who? :wink2:
If you don't know him, come see him shoot at a local IDPA match sometime.
He's pretty impressive (and a good teacher too)

I've never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Brown, but I hope to some day. Highly respected from what I hear.
I'm pinching my pennies (gas price isn't helping any) to be able to attend one of his superb training courses.

His training is worth every penny.
Just eat your Wheaties before you go. It's quite a workout for you and your gun!
