Can anyone help me really understand how the scoring goes for IPSC. I finally scored 40 percent at Oil Capital last month, compared to how I did at Arcaria the first three tries I'm really kind of happy.

Thanks, Mark

Your score for a stage is called a hit factor. Hit factor is simply the points earned for a stage (minus any penalties) divided by your time on that stage. Your hit factor is simply your average points-per-second for that stage.

40% is probably an overall number for the day. Your hit factor for the match was 40% that of the top person in your division (or the match depending on who was being compared).

If you haven’t already been, go to the USPSA link at look at rulebook: http://www.uspsa.org/ Percentage, regardless of if it’s all divisions combined or your division singly, is set by the top shooter for that stage. If that top shooter REALLY shot well, it makes everyone else’s percentage on the small size. If the top shooter only barely pulled ahead of the pack, all other individual’s percentages are bigger. Percentage at any given match is also skewed by who set the top score. A Grand Master, having a really good day, will set the bar so high that everyone else’s scores look pathetic, even when they really are not.

Don’t worry a lot about percentages at this stage. Pay more attention to your points and the time you took to get them. Shoot as quickly as you can, while still making decent hits. Strive for economy of motion and smooth reloads. Procedurals, no-shoots and “mikes” (misses) will kill your percentage and are to be avoided.

Now Eric, that may be simple to say, but it's not EASY for all of us to do!!!!!

But Rod honey, you have to realize, Eric CAN do that, that's why the rest of us need to hit HIM really really fast and all in the A's...sounds fair enough to me. He IS shooting a 1911 now with only 9 shots. Someone can take nine hits for the team. Right? (NOT ME THOUGH!!!)
