Has anyone built their own suppressor? I am thinking about doing it but haven't decided on a design yet.

Haven't done one myself. There is a silencersmithing section on the forums at silencertests.com. You might look there for some ideas/info. Good luck. Post pics when you get one built.
There is faaaaar too much math and high end physics involved in firearms sound suppression for me to be able to design an effective silencer. Not to mention that I have no access to machine tools or skills to use them. I will continue to buy them. If I had the ability to build one though, I would do it.

Rob you are partially correct. When you get into making a suppressor as quiet as possible their is some science and knowledge involved. But just to make a suppressor that lowers the db rating of a 22 or other sub sonic type rounds isn't as hard as you might think.
You can make a good suppressor out of fender washers and what ever type tube you want to use. You can also use freeze plugs. There are several ways to make one out of parts that need no to very little machining. But to make a good k baffle you need a lathe or know someone that does.
I have looked around silencertests for a while. A lot of good information.
I talked to a gentleman yesterday that said he might be willing to help me design my own suppressor. If it works properly I will make another for my 300 whisper. The first is going to be for a 22/223.
If you do a search on the internet you might be able to find a suppressor made out of a maglite flashlight. Pretty cool idea. Just have to make the internals and make the threaded end.
All is very legal on a form 1 as long as you want to pay $200 per suppressor. The only bad thing is on a form 1 you get on shot at it. If it doesn't work it costs you another $200 to make changes or another suppressor. As an individual you are not suppose to have extra suppressor parts laying around.
I know absolutely nothing about Computational Fluid Dynamics....and while I might know slightly more than the average joe on the street about aerodynamics, I have no confidence in my ability to design an experimental, garage built airplane. Just looking at the baffle stacks of some high-end cans tells me that I would be setting myself up for disappointment if I personally tried to design a good can. I do have and have read the Al Paulson books and l lurk at Silencertests quite a bit... really cool stuff.
While, I'm not admitting to breaking laws or anything, I can tell you that I did some stupid things way back in my younger, less mature, high school years that I would never consider doing now. I know all about Maglites and fender washers.....hypothetically speaking.
I grew up knowing a number of people with sizable NFA collections and messed with MGs and suppressors quite a bit. I can say that my Warlock and Trident are worlds quieter than the 80s and early 90s vintage suppressors that I used to shoot. I don't think that *I* could design anything that even comes close to those.
I'm not at all dogging the people that build form 1 suppressors. If you can make one that works well and you are happy with it, that's pretty impressive. I know that I would *personally* never be content with anything that I am capable of designing and building. It does not take much to make a .22lr quiet, but it does when you make the tube less than an inch around and five inches long. A Warlock or Pilot with a tax stamp costs about as much as a decent handgun. Outbacks cost even less. Since the tax is the same regardless and it is something that I plan to have forever, I personally decided to spend the money and get cans that I knew to work well, rather than rely on my own error....since as you said, there can be no trial without multiple stamps or an SOT.
However, if you get approval, design, and build a suppressor, please keep us in the loop. It fascinates me and is something that I might be interested in trying in the future.
It does please me that there are more NFA related posts going on in this forum though.

That's my 2007 New Years resolution. Got my first suppressor this week. Trying to decide if I should do a SBS or SBR next. Both will be had, just not sure in what order. Hope to have one or the other in the mail within a week.
This stuff just adds one more dimension of gun lust.:lookaroun
Fullauto is a good time but I am fascinated by silencers and have been since the first time I shot one when I was in grade school. I take it as a personal mission to expose people to this stuff as I was so that maybe more will learn about NFA and make it more mainstream. The internet has also done wonders for awareness. If anyone wants to hear my suppressors, send me a PM.
I'm looking to go SBR and three or four more cans this year myself.
AAC M4-2000
Norrell Integral on my High Standard HD
AAC 7.62SD
Possibly an AAC Blackbox depending on how people like them.
Sorry about the hijacking mousehouse.

Do you have a can for a .40 ? I'm thinking about a 9mm can and WetWork is looking at a .40 can, but wants to hear one compared to a 9mm first. If it's a huge difference, a 9 might be more desirable.
I have nothing in .40 caliber and honestly, no desire to get one. I have heard a .45 can and decided that 9mm is where it's at for suppression. I am going to give the new AAC .45 can a few months before I think about getting one.

No big deal. I also would like to see more NFA topics discussed.
Several suppressors are using k baffles. They are fairly simple to make if you have a lathe and the tools to go with it. That is what I am probably what I am going to use. I haven't decided. I might try a garage build on my next one just to see how it comes out. It will be a 22. The 223 and 300 whisper will be built in a class II's shop. I hope to gain access to one soon. Once they get everything set up I might be spending a little more time around his shop.
I would also like to build a 10/22 with a internal suppressor. But that is down the road as well.
SBR is another one in my future. That is one reason for the 223 suppressor. I want to build my SBR to look similar to a suppressed MP5.
Dr why not build or buy a AOW shotgun? The main difference between a SBS and AOW is the stock on the SBS. I would like to build a AOW sometime this year. The shop I plan on visiting a lot has built a few AOW shotguns. Plus the stamp is only $5 instead of $200.
Lets get more NFA topics going.
I would like to get a couple of tacked topics started like forming a trust, LLC or corp in Oklahoma for buying NFA weapons. No more CLEO sign offs, fingerprint cards or photos needed.
What about a list of class II or class III dealers in Oklahoma and what experience you have had with them. The good and the bad type stuff. Who takes care of their customers and who is just out to make money type of thing.

Mousehouse,
I've considered the $5 aow for a shotty. I really want a stock and the $200 is worth it IMO. I'll probably get an aow later, but the SBS is hotness for me.
Building an AOW would be a $200 tax. Buying an AOW from someone else is a $5 tax. You build AOWs on Form 1s but transfer them like anything else.
The SBR that I plan to do whenever I can get around to finishing my Trust is an AR lower. I want to build a MK18 upper and a 5 inch three lug 9mm upper with a KAC freefloat RAS so that my trident will fit under the hand guard. That was a big reason that I chose the Trident over the Evolution 9.
Kinda goofy but something that I have also thought about has been a Marlin 1894C in .357 magnum cut down to 16 inches and have a three lug adapter installed for my trident. .38 special from a lever gun would be ultra quiet.

Thanks Rob. I forgot to add that part. I am trying to talk a friend of mine into doing a AOW for me if I help him and supply the gun for a small fee. I like them but the $600 plus price tag for some of them is a little high for me right now.
I understand about the cost of suppressors. Money is the only reason that I have not suppressed every gun in my house. If I had access to machine tools and/or an SOT's assistance, I would be way more interested in Form 1 suppressors.

If I was to do it over I think I would do a SBS instead of a AOW. I would love to put a folder on my AOW!!!!!!

Why can't you do it over again? Is it possible to re-register? This time as an SBS? Would you have to get the AOW removed from the registry?

I was thinking about that. I might do it when I get back from Mississippi. I well be there for 30 Days on a T-38 Crash. http://www.kltv.com/global/story.asp?s=5963152
Wow, that sucks. The forty year old T38s are still cooler than those lame """"T6 Texans""""........I know what a real Texan looks...and sounds like. I'm sad that the T37s are gone. The T1s are just plain annoying for those of us that fly IFR in and out of Stillwater all the time. Seems like they are always holding up the works.
On a related note, I got really lucky on my way back in on wednesday night. I ended up surrounded by a large flock of geese while on short final back into stillwater. I cringed and knew that I was going to hit them but somehow managed to avoid all of them. None of my bird strikes have ever caused any damage. Then again, I have never hit a twenty pound goose.
I'm pretty flexible as to when we do something. If we wait a couple more months or so, I should have some more stuff.

no joke, if something could go bad with a "normal" gun, how much worse it would be going 600 rounds per minute!

Another form 1 on the way. Now the wait begins.
Thinking about doing my own AOW shotgun. Most of the ones I have seen lately are in the $650 plus range plus a $5 transfer tax. I can build my own cheaper then that even with a $200 tax stamp. So that might be my next project after I get the other two finished.
Got to have another winter project. Don't I?
My problem is that I have so many projects going at one time. My winter projects turn into annual projects.

I know the feeling. I will have 3 form 1 projects shortly and might add another one or two.
At the rate that I accumulate projects, I never get anything done in a timely fashion. I'm going to start finishing projects before I move on. I have piles of half finished projects that I need to complete.

Rather than pay $200 for the first AOW stamp ($5 going forward), why not have a manufacturer build it for you and then pay them a much smaller fee so you can get it for $5?

I talked to a guy at work that is a class II and he said if I help or do most of the work myself then he won't charge me anything for using his equipment. So I will probably do the AOW $5 route. I just didn't want to pay $600 or so for a AOW shotgun. I might have $250-$300 in the shotgun if I do most of the work. :)

Sounds good. I don't understand why people try get $600+ for a basic AOW. I could understand if it was a highly modified item. I'd rather build it myself in most situations.
If you don't mind me asking, what's on your current Form 1? What configuration are you going to do on your AOW?
