.308 and 30-06

I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to calibers, so y'alls help is appreciated.

I was told the .308 and 30-06 were basically the same. Is this true? If not, what's the dif? If so, why are there 2?

i could be wrong about this, but
the 3006 has more power, but is less accurate, when compared to a 308 win mag. the 308 win mag has a flatter trajectory.
nothing wrong with the 30 06 though. 308 is more accurate.
thats what i was told by a friend i consider knowledgable.
