Default is there a "list"

Okay guys I have a question about getting a silencer here. First of all When I buy my federal stamp, do I go on any kind of watch list or anything? I don't care except if they ever do get our guns banned I don't wan't them to have anything leading them to believe I have an abundance of guns or anything. But I have noticed even alot of the hardcore conspiracy theory guys have cans. So they must not be too scared of the men in black.

second question. How effective are .223 silencers? more particularly AR-15 silencers? I know it is not gonna be like on the movies or anything, But I don't wan't to spend $800 to $1000 total if it really isn't going to quieten the gun down all that much.

Getting on some kind of "watch list" is a common NFA myth. You would be on no more of a list than anyone posting on a gun board. Another myth is that ATF can come to your house and search it at any time. That too is false. Only NFA Dealers have compliance inspections.

As for the .223 suppressor, you are correct in that it will not be quiet like they show in the movies. The .223 round is still supersonic and the sonic boom is still quite noticeable, but not painful. It will sound about like a .22LR rifle. If you shoot subsonic rounds they are very quiet, but you might as well just shoot .22LR then as the velocity is about the same.

Steve is 100% on the money - I'd just like to ad that for me a suppressed .223 is quieter than a deuce-deuce (I can shoot a suppressed .223 outdoors without hearing protection and it's comfortable - I can't do the same with an unsuppressed .22 - I have to wearing hearing protection).

I agree a suppressed .223 is quieter than a normal .22LR rifle. I always shoot standard velocity .22LR (not the hi velocity stuff which is supersonic), so my .22LR rifle unsuppressed does not seem that loud to me. When using my M4-2000 on my AR it sounds the same or maybe a little less than the .22LR.

With a suppressed AR, the loudest sound that you'll hear is the "SPRONG" after each shot. The sonic crack is there, but it is much less annoying than the sprong. I guess because it is right next to your ear.

Suppressed .223 is so worth the price of admission.

I'm not an AAC fanboy by any means, but SPR/M4 or M4-2000 for sure for a 5.56 can.

Get a good spring and then no more "SPRONG"!

When you buy an NFA item you "register" it in your name just like your car.
Only you pay a 1 time tax instead of yearly.
Will it get you on a special watch list? No!
What will get you on a "list" is buying stuff that is borderline illegal off the internet or the shotgun news or some other magazine.
A "Drop-in Auto Sear" comes to mind as a definite no-no.
Anything for a full-auto and they don't have your name in the system will pop a flag.

My theory is, if you think there is a list, then yes, there is. and you're on it. twice.
