I think it's a bad idea. And not because I'm a cop. Hell, I hate being in uniform and wearing a gun out in open. A few years ago, it could have been a deterrent, but the way dopers are nowadays?

If a BG sees you totin' iron and he has an illegal act on his mind, you with the open carry is the person he is gonna eliminate first. Without concealment, you take away the element of surprise. Basically...you're a sitting duck, because you can bet your bottom dollar, that the BG is gonna have his concealed until he makes his dastardly move!

Yeah, I understand what you are saying, but you are speaking as an educated PEACE LOVING man. Bad guys don't see it thataway. Kinda like door locks on your car. All they do is keep an honest man out.

And I'm not gonna open the whole can of worms about bad guys and guns - I know they're not suppossed to have 'em. Of course, you ain't suppossed to speed...or float stop signs...or drink and drive either, but I'll bet my whiskers one of you (perhaps MANY of you) either have in the past, or probably will by next weekend!

In a perfect world...

I still have my flamesuit on!

Not flaming you bro, but dont you think that the same thing can happen to cops who open carry? It is possable that the BG could off a cop from behind and the cop not even know what hit him, then grab his firearm and go...but thne again the BG would allready most likely have a firearm to begin with.

So why would it be differant for a non le to open carry? Training, not buying it, if I can carry conceled all day long with no "offical training" than what would the differance be if I open carry?, There would be no differance.

I guess I look at it as anyone who can legally own a firearm can protect themselves without the wait and expense of a concealed carry permit.

As far as them picking you off first, I'm sure that could possibly happen. Then again, those guys are predators. Are the predators going to go after the strongest in the heard, or prey on the weak ones? I'd think if someone was looking for an easy target, they might choose to pass on the man/woman packin' heat.

Just my thoughts.

I think that there are valid arguments on both sides of this issue. Having the ability to decided for myself is the only thing that tilts things one way or the other for me. With that in mind I don't think that open carry the best idea, not for me at least. I also think that comparing open carry to concealed carry with regard to the training required is a mistake. Open carry adds another "layer" to carrying a weapon safely, IMHO...
