Default Tulsa World article about test firing guns in the Weleetka murders

They sent out about 60 letters, had about 40 people show up for the test firing, 5 gave names of people they've sold their weapons to, and the other 15 or so will be "looked into".

WOW!!!! 40 showed up that is amazing to me! Perhaps it is just a sign of a community that wants to help bring this tragedy to an end and speed up the search.

How does that work? The owner gets to wait for the gun or not? How long is the gun out of the owner's possession?

Yeah, but it's all so silly. I mean, who's going to show up with the weapon that was used in the murders?

I kinda hate to be a prick about it all, but if they felt they had probable cause to suspect me, then they need to get a warrant. I mean, if I had a legitimate alibi, then there's no reason for me to volunteer to go anywhere to have my gun 'test fired'.

Why don't they just test fire all the .40 cal handguns in Oklahoma? Yeah, that's the ticket.

I hate to perhaps sound callous about the tragedy, that's not my intent at all, but this is some of the goofiest stuff I've ever heard of.

Where did they come up with the list? Wasn't aware we had gun registry in OK.

Well, since they can determine the manufacture of the gun used (rifling, twist, lands, grooves, etc.) then they could contact the manufacturer. The manufacturer could give them the distributor's names. The distributor could give the police the names of the stores they sold to. The stores have the FFL forms and can supply those to the police.

Just a guess.

...and Channel 4 just ran a spot on the news at 6pm...giving OSBI number to those who want to volunteer??? Why would I be concerned if MY gun was used in a murder unless I just bought it used??

Now that is some great investigative work!

Again, what the OSBI stupidly did was ensure that, if the real murderer still has the murder weapon and got one of these letters, he will now WITHOUT DOUBT destroy it POST HASTE.

Actually they just weeded out all but 15 or so suspect hand guns. ;-)

That's exactly what I thought. "The hit and run suspect vehicle was a blue Ford Taurus. Everyone in Tulsa County with a blue Ford Taurus should voluntarily report to the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office for vehicle inspection. If you don't... we'll come looking for you." Brilliant.

Also, don't a lot of PD's use .40's? I wonder if they're going to test fire all of those as well?

How long do stores hold onto FFL forms?

So far as I understand it 4473s and bound books are retained forever. When the dealer goes out of business or his FFL is revoked or whatever all records are turned into the ATF to be held forever.

So do I understand that a 'Registered Owner' is one one who has filled out a 4473 form
