I have to say one of the coolest feelings I ever had was sitting in the archives in Austin, TX and looking at the names of my relatives from the Mexican census of 1829. The dad was pretty old but he had a 16yo son.
One of them went on to fight in the Army of the Republic of Texas and went on to be in some Navy for the Mexican-American war. IIRC Texas gave him 7500 acres for his years of service. I found a pension request many years later where he said he had under 200 acres and a small count of cattle.
His son fought in the Texas Brigade for the CSA and judging by what I've read a whole lot of them got killed. Thankfully, he made it.

Another relative was killed at the Battle of Middle Boggy Depot. About half of the Seminole Battalion of Mounted Rifles were killed there.

What about your family?

Relatives on my Mother's side of the family fought in the Civil War for the South. They're buried in the Whitley/Jones Family Cemetary near Palo Pinto lake in Texas. Now my Grandmother spoke of one of relative who was a pilot in the Pacific and may have flown with Greg "Pappy" Boyington before he formed the Black Sheep Squadron. My Dad fought in the Viet Nam war.

Makes me jealous because the only war I fought in was the War of the Roses with my ex-wife, lol!

My grandpa on my mom's side of the family was a career navy man who was apart of the bay of pigs and was also in vietnam. My grandpa on my dad's side was in the pacific from 1942-1946 and all of his brothers served during World War II as well. I have numerous uncle's and cousins and relatives who are long gone who have seen the battlefields of america, the french countrysides of 1917-18, european countrysides of 1943-1945, korea, vietnam and some more recently in iraq and afghanistan.

Civil War ... A great uncle was hanged as a spy by Union troops in Fulton Ky.

WW1

WWII my grandad was excused for his civilian skills.... He set up the machines to build the machines that killed Facists. My other Uncles all served in the USA or USN. One jumped into France on June5/61944
Several were recalled to serve in Korea

3 of my older cousins did combat tours in Veitnam
My dad was married with kids when his draft number finally came up ....
-he was defered and worked in strategic industries at the time.

I missed the draft by a couple of years. I did spend some time working for military contractors.

My dad was an Airborne Ranger with the 101st (Screaming Eagles) in Vietnam. 3 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

Unfortunately, Vietnam got to him and he returned a druggie. He was killed by the Italian mob when I was 3 or 4.
