Went on the road with a band in hopes of being a rock star!! 6 years later had to cut my hair and get a job.
Hindsight I should have gone back to college when the rock star thing didn't work out.

After High School, I learned it's who you know, not what you know. Network, but don't ass kiss. Be polite to everyone you work with, be likeable, make sure you are remembered positively. You can learn pretty much any job out there while on the job, no one can teach you to work hard, that's on you.

After high school I had no money for education. Off I went into the military. Five years later I had GI bill and was ready for school. Really enjoyed my military experience. Would not trade it for anything.

Hmmm ... not multiple choice so it won't let me answer. I did 2 year college AND the work force. Then moved on to 4 year college after graduating with an AAS.

Cavedweller is right about a lot of things. It's not what you learn at school, at work and out socializing, it's about the connections you make and the impression you make on them.

My story is much like the rest here. Went to college after high school (well OKC Community College, cause I was paying for most of it). That was OK, went to work doing testing on some electronic equipment that I had no idea what it was doing. Got in good with some folks in the company I worked for and moved up into the engineering department as a tech. Just worked hard at everything I was asked and to do and the opportunities came and I took advantage. Now I run a machine shop and restore antique and classic cars for the same guy that I started working for when I was 18; I turn 39 tomorrow. I love what I do, wouldn't change it.

Now, my wife went to college and got a 4 year degree. She does make more money than me, but I think she doesn't enjoy her job like I enjoy mine. I know it may be hard to comprehend right now, but money is not everything. Enjoying what you do as a job makes it a hell of a lot easier to get up in the morning.

This. There's a certain value placed on headaches, stress, anxiety, and sanity. The money part should only be considered a "perk".
