Just picked up one of these yesterday for an upcoming elk hunt. Was told it's been under a bed for 13 years and he didn't even know if it had ever been shot. Spent an hour cleaning it since it was crusty around the free bore part. Research has shown it's a 94/95 built in New Haven, Connecticut. Got it with a soft case and crappy Simmons scope for under $400 and it's in really good shape and doesn't look like it's been shot, even though I couldn't tell if it had been. I was surprised how well the trigger feels after reading negative post on the model 70's triggers.

My question is does anyone own one of these? Can you give me any input on accuracy, suggested upgrades etc... I realize I'll know much more after shooting it next week but was just looking for general info and suggestions ahead of time.

Thanks

I ASSUME you mean a WINCHESTER Model 70? If it's a Remington, it's probably a Model 700. If it's a Model 70 - Winchester.

Wow, big mistake on my part, you are correct. Need to delete that altogether and try again.

Ain't no big thang ... long as you know what you got. Either one is a good rifle. I'm partial to Winchester. Nothing wrong with Remington 700. As you already mentioned ... ditch the scope and go for some quality optics. You say you have thoroughly cleaned ... good deal. I would check to be sure the barrel is free floated. Check torque on bedding screws. Since you're gonna' replace the optics anyway, I would take it out of the stock entirely and search for any hidden damage. Screw it back together, make sure scope bases and rings are tight. Hit the range and give us a report. Nice find! (and, good luck on the elk hunt ... we need details!)

I had the thing apart and other than the crust near the free bore it looks unfired. I will give a report after giving it a go. Trying to deal on some good glass right now.

Good deal. Depending on how far you want to go, you might check the bedding on the receiver. Might be OK as is, but if it doesn't group like you think it should, you might look into having someone glass bed it (if it's not already). I don't know how much cash you want to invest in this, but you certainly bought the rifle right! If you figure it's gonna' be a lifelong keeper, there are a number of things you might consider.

Is it all black with synthetic stock and no floor plate? If it is, I have that gun in 30-06 that Ive had since around 1998. I still use it to hunt at times and it shoots great. At one time the safety got really hard to set, so I sent the bolt to a friend that took it all apart and cleaned it and its worked just fine since then. I bought mine at wallyworld back then and at the time it also came with a cheap simmons scope. I got rid of that junk scope pretty quickly.

Now about 8 years ago, I also bought the 300 win mag, possibly just like the gun you have and it was exactly like my 30-06. A friend of mine was selling it and he still had that junk simmons scope on it as well. I swapped the scope out and kept it for a couple of years, but felt like it was overkill for deer hunting, so I ended up selling it. It was also pretty lightweight and made the recoil somewhat unpleasant after about 5 rounds in a row. lol
