If the police do not understand why the public isn't holding them in the highest regard, this is the perfect example. Hell, even Barney Fife could have handled an 84 y/o woman.

I admit this sounds bad but we really do not have details sufficient to know what went down. Would it read much better as "Cops tase 84 year old" or "Cops shoot 84 year old" or "Cops punch/knock down 84 year old"...no, so they are kind of in a lose-lose situation. I can imagine a perp actively trying to escape taking the full efforts of two deputies/officers and if one of them turns to hold the 84 year old back then the perp will get away or even over-power/injure the other officer. I don't know any of the preceding is true but that goes back to my original point - we don't know enough to do more than feed our prejudices at this point.

If you're ok with the police deploying pepper spray on an unarmed 84 y/o woman, then it only makes since that you're ok with them treating a 5 y/o the same way. It's not a "lose/lose" situation. It's a "get your adrenaline in check and get your priorities straight" situation.

You clearly have much more info than I do on this situation. Age isn't written on your shirt and you are making an assumption (or have personal knowledge) about what this particular 84 year old looks like and acts. I have an 80 year old relative who one would probably assume is in his late 50s maybe 60, no where near 80 and he's pretty darn spry. I admit it isn't likely to be that way in this case but that's different from saying it has to be that way.
