Being left eye dominant, and then being forced to become a left handed shooter from marine corps instructors during boot camp, I can honestly say that if/when you decide to try shooting left handed the AR will be the most ergonomic by a mile, even a "right handed" one. Especially considering the ejection is on the right side of the weapon, checking for a malfunction/dry magazine is made even easier.

I have a friend and she is left eye dominate and shoots right handed.
She never shot a rifle ..I had her shoot my .308 bolt rifle.
I noticed she looked odd shooting it and that is when I found out about the left eye thing.

I had her close the left eye and look through the right one..she said OH that is much easier!.
She out shot her husband that day and he shot rifles many times.

Guys when you say SKS is more accurate than an AK do you have any numbers to share.
And Not all SKS rifles will shoot with the same accuracy. I would think the same would hold true for the AK

I had an SKS. Yea the recoil was small it shouldered well for me, I am 5-11 But the accuracy past 100 yards was horrendous..I should say past 85 yards was terrible.
I sold it .. but I am all about accuracy. My friend has it and said it is the most accurate rifle he has.

My 7MM Mauser was not accurate unless you just count the first shot. The first shot from a cold barrel was right on the money every time.
If you kept shooting by the time you got to the 7th shot it was 4" high and 7" to the left.. It made a nice rainbow dotted line getting there.(Sold it)

How accurate is the SKS and AK you guys speak of.

Does the original poster want accuracy or does he want to just lob lead in a semi auto fashion.
What kind of accuracy would pleas him.
Shooting squirrel heads at 200 yards or shooting milk jugs at 100 yards.

Shooting squirrel heads at 200 yards or shooting milk jugs at 100 yards.

That would be a good question. AKs and SKSs weren't meant for "shooting squirrel heads at 200 yards", so if that is the goal, they aren't the rifle for the OP. They were meant for shooting human-sized targets at close to medium range, and they've excelled at that for decades. So with those options, the milk jugs at 100 yards should be doable. Different rifles for different things, and for different tastes. For me, "accurate enough" is good enough, as I don't get into the "how tight of groups can I shoot" thing, and shooting at paper from a bench loses it's appeal within about 1 magazine. But shooting at random targets out to about 100 yards - whether in a field, or shooting into a creek, etc., is a great time with an SKS or AK, but would be pretty "meh" (to me) with a nice bolt action.

I had my marlin 22 and my marlin 30-30 model 336 and 2 12 gauge pumps stolen many years ago..That was all my guns.

I was gunless.
My wife ..girlfriend then and my dad went in 1/2's and got me an sks.
I cleaned all the cosmoline off and began shooting it.. was ok MOA of deer at 80..I had a shot at 125 yards broadside..I aimed at the double lung area..easy shot.
Deer dropped like a rock.
I got over there and it had an exit hole in the neck about 1.5 feet from aim point.

I then began testing it at 100-150 yards.
No good..My 30-30 had me spoiled as did a slug from a 12 gauge at that distance.
I would be lucky to hit the milk jug every time at 100 with the sks.

I did not reload my ammo then.. it was store ammo.

cjjtulsa thanks for the information on them.. I just assumed they would at least be as good as a 30-30.. never researched them or even wanted to after that one I had.

I've owned many SKS's and several AK's. My choice of either one, assuming these were the only choices, would depend on the battlefield. In a WWII European scenario, it would be an SKS. In a Vietnam setting, it would be an AK. That's a great over-simplification, but I'm sure you get the idea. If I were able to pick my SKS, it would be a Model 63 (not type 63 North Korean) with a 20" barrel; best of both worlds since it is made to take AK mags. I'd take that one over the AK every time.

I tried out a friend's 10/22 that had a red/green dot sight and couldn't get into the .22's lack of feedback.

Any suggestions?

I just read somewhere that there was a brake for a 10/22 that increased perceived recoil to mimic that of .223. The 10/22 is a great rifle with lots of aftermarket support. That said, I'd go with an AR platform first, with an AK second, mostly due to aftermarket support. The AK will enjoy cheaper ammo if you're cool with the steel-cased stuff or you are looking to hoard a bunch of it, just watch what you use at the ranges, as many won't allow it.

skip the ak and get a suppressor for the AR, luminous sights, a .22 conversion unit, and night vision of some sort. You'll be way ahead. There is not a single rd of AK ammo in any NG or military arsenal. You'd be denying yourself access to billions of rds. There's no decent .22 unit for the AK. The 2 guns handle very differently. So the training you do with one is "un-doing" your training with the other. There's no reason to bother with both.

VZ2008 maybe?

About a year ago I wanted to get something in 7.62x39 since the ammo was available and cheap and I was originally going to get either an SKS or an AK. Ive shot several SKS's before over the years and they always just felt a little awkward to me. The shape of the stock or something I guess. But on the other hand the AK would cost a few hundred $$$ more. After looking around at different guns, I ended up going with the VZ2008. I think I got it from PSA for $399 and it came with 3 mags. Ive been very pleased with it so far and haven't had any problems.

That. milled receivers from the start, weighs less than an AK. the ONLY downside is price of mags. got mine from Aim Surplus, they appear to be out of stock at the moment.
