Well its about that time of year again...headed to Nebraska this weekend for opening week of Pheasant season. My buddies there who are harvesting right now are saying they've seen alot more birds this year than they have in about 10 years which is promising. Population has been WAY down for a while now but the last few years have shown decent growth (still slim pickings...but about 5 years ago my dad walked for a week and didnt even SEE a bird).
Weather wont be ideal, a bit too warm for my hunting likes but it is what it is and I hope to see some nature and maybe have a bird or two for dinner next week.

I'll be taking an assortment of shotguns. My primary bird gun is my Auto 5, but I'll probably walk a field with a BSS, Superposed, 1887 and 1901 just for the heck of it.

All the farmers up there are deer hunters so they let us pheasant hunt to our hearts content. I'd guess they have about 6-7k acres they let us walk. Obviously not all is cover but there's enough to wear a guy out.

Good luck. Going on my first pheasant hunt ever in December. Heading to the panhandle with the men's group from our church. I can't wait.
Get your walking boots on! I love pheasant hunting. My britt does too. Not so good on quail, but he loves to follow the pheasant trails. They would rather run than fly, so when I see his head down, Its time to get on his back side and follow him to the bird. Its not like quail hunting. You don't wander around the field waiting on the dog to point and casually walking up to bust the covey like you see on TV.

What 12 gauge ammo do you guys recommend? No pheasant hunting experience what so ever. I've hunted ducks hard for years and use a full choke with 3 inch #3's and had a lot of success. My research suggests a modified choke with 2 3/4 #6 shells. What have y'all had the best success with?

2 3/4 lead, 1 1/4oz minimum, 5 shot early season.
Late season, 1 3/8 oz, 4 shot. Look for the highest velocity. Early season, close shots are the norm. Late season, tighter choke tubes and heavier shot are for smart birds that get up at longer ranges.
