Bought my 13 year old a .243 and am very glad with my decision. He put it to work last weekend. Both deer went maybe 20 yards a piece.

Looks like the 223 has had plenty of success. I think that round in that gun would make a fun little rifle. Those are very nice looking guns.

243... overall just because of popularity and ease of finding ammo. Personal choice is 6.8 spc. then again.... you just can't go wrong with the caliber that did it for the longest 30-30. 80% of all the people I talk to says the 30-30 was what they used first.

you could get a 30-30 and load up some 125gr bullets with a modest charge and let him work up in both powder and bullet weight - he would have a rifle that he could use forever - on anything in this part of the country...

A little late, but my girls all started out with lever action .357 mags. Very low recoil and very lightweight. 4 deer so far and all dropped where they stood. We hunt the wooded hills so 100yrds is max range. Hornady LeverEvolution work wonderfully but they've also dropped them with standard JHP.

We use .243 for all of our youth hunters at the Okla Youth Hunting Program. Our hunters harvest their deer with one shot kills year after year after year with a .243. My hunter harvests his/her deer with a 6mm because of low recoil and devastation on the receiving end. Nuff said.
