Well I tried this bullet this season and it kills them dead.
I recovered some of the bullet from one large buck a buddy shot.
It had some mushrooming .. jacket did come apart and left shrapnel , which is fine by me if the deer dies quick.

It will power through a shoulder but not tough enough to make it out of the other shoulder.. which is good. 2 busted up shoulders does not put as much meat on the table.

In 2 shoulder shots and a head on chest shot the hearts were destroyed.
The head on chest shot the bullet did not exit.. Must have ended up in the guts somewhere..I did not search for it.

I chose this bullet because in my 30-06 and .308 it is accurate in the higher fps area than my 165 or 168 gr bullets .
2815 fps in the 20.5" .308 and 2980 fps in the 22" 30-06.

The bullets are seated .005-.010" off the lands.
30-06 load is R-P annealed cases BR2 primers 3.280" OAL (in my 100atr) 53 gr IMR 4064 This load is safe in my gun and may be over book max.. so work up.

The .308 load is annealed Winchester cases, 210M primers 46.5gr Varget 2.818" OAL in my savage 10fp Heavy barrel.
This may also be over book max so consult your manual ,,it is safe in my gun. may not be in yours.

I like the Annealed cases..I anneal each time ..I shoot 3 shot groups and The first shot needs to plant where I aim.
Really needs to from a fouled or clean barrel and hot or cold day.

These loads do that for me.
The 30-06 load at 500 yards printed a 4.9" 3 shot group.. the first 2 shots were 1.8" apart. the most important shots for general hunting in my mind.

The .308 grouped that load 4.615" at 500 yards.

May not be super great but the bullet did it's job and put the deer on the ground.

I shot some deer with the 178 A-Max and it will power through both shoulders on a broad side shot..Too devastating for my table.
The 168gr I could not send very fast 2500 fps in my .308, I could not reach a High accuracy node .

My loads may not work in your rifle and all loads need worked up to.
As we know lot numbers of powder and bullets change things.
Not all scales will be the same either.
Not all gun chambers are the same size.. A big reason to work up to the load your gun likes.
Happy Hunting.

Man I used a 168 hpbt matchking for over 10 years out of my 300 win mag for deer and it killed them like being struck by lightening and not much meat damage. Sounds a lot like what you been getting out of your loads you listed. I just switched to the 200gr ELDX to see what I can get out of it but I havent killed anything with it yet. I will eat a pig soon enough just to see.

My drop was greater with the 168 A-Max.
I did use that 168 on a 500 lb black Angus right in the forehead .When hit there was a large shock wave that made large ripples down the entire body.
Friend seen that I was the shooter. It plopped hard right there on the ground and looked like someone turned on the water hose as blood was flowing out of the mouth like water.

Sorry gross.
The doe took one in the chest at 200 yards .308 one buck quartering away got it at 100 yards 30-06 and the other buck got it from my buddy and the .308 at 75 yards.
I gutted the quartering away buck but since it is so cold it has been hanging with hide on.
So I will allow it to hang for as long as it stays cold like this.

I let one hang for 10 days and it was fork tender no matter how you cooked it. So tasty.

i like the a-max but wasn't getting an exit wound. the entrance was usually a small clean hole. three deer dropped almost immediately but there was no blood trail.
the vitals were nowhere to be found, almost liquid/jelly. i changed to a soft point and get an exit wound and a blood trail. if i was only hunting in open country, the a-max would be my bullet. if i'm hunting wooded or thick areas, i need a trail to follow.
ruger and cz 30-06 were the guns

I really do not need an exit wound if the animal is hit hard enough and the bullet expels all the energy inside the animal they 9 times out of 10 drop where they were hit.
And do not get up.
My 30-30 with 150gr soft points would always exit and the deer would most of the time run off about 100 yards.
A few spine shots and one between the eyes anchored them with the 30-30.

That mushroomed bullet exiting the deer has not treated me well.
The bullet that explodes like a hand grenade inside the deer has worked better for me.

I got an exit with the Hornady #3031 bullet in my 30-06 ,, with muzzle velocity just a tick over 3000 fps no matter where I hit them..

Well can't say that for a fact as my buddy hit one in the rear 1/2" away from the bunghole!
Flipped the deer 2 times did not find the bullet.

I broadside shot behind the shoulder a nice buck with the Hornady 3031 and it sprayed blood out the other side for 25 feet.
Deer went 80 yards and crashed into a tree in the tree line.. sounded just like a car crash I kid you not.
Never heard anything like it.

The deer you hit with the A-Max did they run off ?
Yep the 3031 is a soft point and soft points have killed deer and many other beasts for over 100 years.

Nice.
I have thought many times while carrying my 30-06 of an improved wildcat.
Great cases and i thought a lot of the taper could be removed improve the shoulder blow it out a bit farther in the process.
You get a shorter neck.. but I think the 270 case is actually longer and would allow the neck to stay long. I could be wrong on that though.

I have thought of the Gibbs
