This probably will mean nothing to anyone but me...

My mom was going through some stuff and ran across this old knife. It's ugly, rough and nothing fancy at all, but thing is, my great grandfather made it during the Great Depression. I'm not sure what the blade is made of, but the handle is a length of copper tubing that is flattened into an oval and filled with what I believe is some mixture of zinc. I've made knives off and on for about 14 years now but never knew that it ran in my blood.

I've got my grandpa's old Boy Scout knife from somewhere around 1917 - 1919, and I'm glad to have this one that his father made with his own hands at a time when life was so tough.

That will be something to pass down for generations! And very cool that a hobby was unknowingly passed down as well! Make sure you write down what you know about it so the story can be passed down as well! We got an old sword from my husbands grandfather. It's a Masonic sword but has someone else's name on it. I wish we knew the story of how it came to be in our family.

Very nice! Make sure you make a journal of this and other custom knives. Especially, one with such a cool story. Include everything you know about it and maybe even a picture. It will mean something to someone someday. My dad was a knife collector built a couple himself and has a lot from other guys around town or that he found at a gun show. The thing is he passed unexpectedly and we know nothing about these knives. Some of which probably have some really cool stories behind them.

Could be made out of an old file, I’ve got one somewhere in the garage made from a file. Since is was made during the Great Depression I’d be willing to bet it used to be a file. Back in the fifties we kids used to talk about making a file knife.
