It all depends on the physical layout of the airport and what equipment they have. Each airport complies with specific guidelines that allow for variances due to conditions. An airline agent should never ask you to demonstrate a gun is unloaded. They should at least verify that you have a locked hard sided case. Porters/skycaps running baggage from public to secured areas are "authorized representatives" of your air carrier. They have authorization to move checked baggage and check it in at curbside in many airports.
Places like NYC, New Jersey and several other communist enclaves will definitely put you under the jail if you're caught in their jurisdiction with a gun and not a LEO, regardless of whether you're complying with the FOPA or not.

trIdiot, I would not have taken a pistol if I had not been an LEO. I read and re-read the applicable laws and felt I was on solid ground to take my pistol. The officer that escorted me downstairs said that travelers often carry their guns from their home states and commonly have a CCW permit by that state. Since NYC does not accept those, the travelers are in trouble when they go to fly out. It is often that they walk around Manhattan for a number of days blissfully unaware they are in trouble. He said that the loophole is a 24 grace period where if the weapon carrier tells the officers that he has only had it less than 24 hours, he is good to go with a warning since they do not investigate how long the person has been in the city. They could have travelled out of Manhattan during their stay. Based on what I read, that only applies to long guns so I took it with a grain of salt that he was telling the truth.
We had also visited the 911 Memorial and I was carrying my pistol at that time as well. That security is TSA tight and I spoke with another NYPD officer first. I told him I was from out of state and an officer that was carrying a pistol. I asked him if I could lock it in his car while I went inside the museum and he did me one better, he walked with me to his nearby percent house and let me put it in their gun lockers. I kept the key and went back afterwards to get my gun. Really neat interaction.

That's cool... just one more example of how screwed up NYC is though. Glad it worked out for you.
Having a "good experience" just flying on American is becoming rare.
