Also, due to the ignition source, these require a FFL transfer. I haven't looked into restrictions other states might have in the use of them.
What is it about the ignition source?
The Gen 1 Savage Smokeless required a FFL transfer.
The Gen 2 didn't.
I have the Gen 1, and did have to fill out the paperwork. I called BS on the gun store owner, but went along. Going home I looked it up, and he was right.
Never looked at a Gen 1 vs Gen 2 to see the difference. I'd like to know.
Later on, I looked it up in the Federal regs that spell out what a convicted felon still has rights to use in response to a post on OSA. Bow is fine, and federal law says a Mz is Ok, but Oklahoma law says felons cannot use Muzzle Loaders even though the feds have no problem.

Does yours have the vent liners in the breech plug or the silver plug insert on the barrel side of the breech plug?

Its been so long since I cleaned it, I honestly don't remember. Load a shot one year, kill something with it, load a shot, do the same next year.
Probably hasn't had two dozen shots through it since it was new.
Thats the beauty of a smokeless.

As I understand it, it is because of the cut down and primed 308 case used as the ignition source.

You are correct, but to be more exact... It is because the receiver is set up to be used as a centerfire rifle, just has a muzzleloader barrel/breech system installed. All a guy would have to do is get it rebarelled like any other rem 700 action and he would have a centerfire rifle. Same reason you have to fill out paperwork for a tc encore set up as a muzzleloader. Barrel swap and you are running centerfire rifle.

I have a smokeless built on one of the original 700ml actions that has no locking lugs and is set up for 209 primer ignition. It works pretty well!

My dad gave me one years ago, but he got a stupid deal on it, $200 if I remember, a $75 SKS paratrooper, and a $250 Marlin with scope. Sadly, the ML and lever gun were stolen when he passed. Never had any problems with it, but then again, never shot it much either.
