Default How can I tell if I have a 455 Oldsmobile engine?

I've got a few engines lying around that I'm going to sell and one of them is a 1970 455 Oldsmobile, but I'm not sure which one it is. Is there a way to identify it by the casting numbers on the head or the block or something?

Google "how to identify a 455 oldsmobile engine"

The head casting "numbers" should be letters (like "C" or "E") if they are 455 heads, I believe the smaller blocks (403, 350, etc) have actual numbers (like "3" or "8")

Edit: Also - a big block (400, 425, 455) measures 14" between the heads at the manifold base, small blocks (330, 350, 403) measure 12"

When you run it over 6000 RPM for about a half hour and end up spinning a main bearing and luckily not blowing the whole bottom end out.

At least that's what I did...

Olds motors are notorious for blowing all the oil up to the top end at higher RPM. But I still love 'em. Great torque.

There will be an oil fill tube at the front of the engine.

Edit: That is if you're trying to ID it as an Olds motor in general...
