As my first post here, I wanted to say thanks for the write-up; it helped me get a little closer to shooting my first match.
I am now just waiting on the delivery of some equipment before I start. I have a 10mm with an 8 round mag but will soon have a combined total of 3 (one in the gun, two on the hip). It appears that while I may be good for IDPA, I will still probably be a little short for the others.

You're quite welcome! The main thing is to just jump in with both feet and have fun. Honing your skills is just a great bonus! You'll get to meet a really fantastic group of people, always willing to take the time to help a beginner.

As I said, just get started, your tastes or needs/desires may change slightly after you get your feet wet and know a little more about it all. Enjoy yourself!

I hope this the correct forum to pose these questions.

Ive just recently stippled my m&p frontstrap as well as the grip inserts, is this allowed in idpa ssp division?

Is there a minimum trigger pull weight required?

Could I run a apex fss kit in my m&p and still remain in the ssp division?

Front strap and grip aftermarket stippling moves the gun to ESP. You can stipple the removeable portion of the backstrap without a trip to ESP.

No minimum trigger pull, BUT all safety devices must continue to operate and be functional.

I believe H&H does? Just watch this forum (IDPA and IPSC), usually there are notices posted anwhere from a week in advance to a couple of days in advance of the upcoming weekends events. Once you find the clubs/ranges in that area that host events, you can visit their websites and some will have a calendar of events or say "2nd Saturday of every month..." or whatever.

Take a short hop out I-40 west to Weatherford and the Tin Star Range, just on the the eastern outskirts of town. You can actually see the range from I-40 looking south, if you know what to look for.

Another rather short hop will get you to Tulsa, there to shoot IDPA at USSA (2nd Saturday) and Oil Capital (2nd Sunday & 4th Saturday).

There used to be an active IDPA club at H & H; they folded quite a while back, maybe 5 years ago. They were a good sized club, lots of shooters. Other things got in the way of their continued success.

Question: Is there a minimum age limit? I cannot find it anywhere.

Rulebook page 52 addresses this. Ages 12-20 may compete, when host club allows and no violation of state law occurs. For purposes of sanctioned match awards, the High Junior will be aged from 12 through 18.

As a practical matter, youngsters often do well in IDPA. Some parents will start them with a revolver, to encourage accuracy. Most start with a 9mm semi-auto.

Parents are expected to closely supervise their youngsters at the match.

I took my son to quite a few ranges when he was 12, rented probably 20 different handguns, just shopping for something I liked. I ended up buying a 1911 but then got interested in IDPA and bought a G34 because it's much cheaper to compete with (9mm vs 45). My son really liked the glock so I bought him a G17 for his 13th birthday and we shot matches all the time. He still loves it but doesn't get as much time to shoot now that he's older and on his own now. Local IDPA welcomed him with open arms and we both had a ball. Great father-son time.
