So last night I went to grab some food. I guess when I went to go take a whiz, my shirt got pulled up and made the top of my weapon show. I went back to my table where I was eating without realizing it was showing. I sat down, and as I always do, made sure my shirt was covering the weapon, and realizing it wasn't I pulled it down.

So I am sitting there and employee/manager walks over to me. He looks nervous. The conversation went like this:

(Him) - Sir, one of our employees noticed you had a concealed weapon.
(Me) - OK?
(Him) - I was told to ask to see your license for carrying.
(Me) - Excuse me?
(Him) - I have to ask to see your license to carry.
(Me) - Are you a police officer?
(Him) - No, I am not.
(Me) - Then no you can't ask. If you want to call the police I will be happy to sit here and wait for them. But no, you may not see it.
(Him) - Well, should I be worried for any reason?
(Me) - Well I paid with my credit card, and have sat here and eaten half my meal. I think you should be ok.
(Him) - I'm sorry, I don't know what to do in this situation.
(Me) - You have no need to be sorry. This was my fault, I should have checked my shirt when I left the bathroom. The whole point of a concealed carry is to keep it concealed and I apparently didn't do that. My fault. If you don't want guns in the restaurant let me know and I will leave.
(Him) - No, it's fine, no problem. I just have never encountered this before.
(Me) - I can assure you that hundreds of people walk through these doors with a concealed weapon - not everyone with a gun is a bad guy.

I screwed up, and I guess if the police showed up I could have been ticketed for tracing. Either way, honest mistake, but one I wanted to share...

Sounds like it went pretty well...a rational discussion between two adults resulting in an educational experience for all involved.

You didn't say anything about awkward / tense silence at any point... so I'm pretty sure you didn't tell us the WHOLE story! *sarcasm*

Glad it worked out alright. Good to see you handled it calmly, and so did the manager.

Sounds like it ended well. My question is, why would you mind showing him your license since you screwed up and started the whole thing to begin with? I realize it is not required but whats the big deal.

Thank you gentlemen :)

Well, because I didn't feel in any way obligated to show it to him. If I am driving and someone cuts me off, I can't pull over and ask them for their drivers license... It's not my place to do so.

I told him I would wait for the police to arrive and show it to them - which I think clearly demonstrates that I had nothing to hide.

I think your question is valid though - but that is just my feelings on the matter.

Thanks again for everyones input. Regards,
Jonny

You're lucky it went down the way it did. I would have shown my license and be done with it. He could have both asked you to leave and/or called the police after you refused. If not, the employee who noticed your weapon could have called on his/her own on their cellphone after you had refused if they were genuinely in fear.

In situations like that where they're not sure what to do and instead of immediately overreacting and screaming "GUN" and calling the police, but instead is courteous enough to atleast confront you about it, it's better to oblige. It's better to make them feel at ease and comfortable. They're stressed, in fear, and don't know how to handle the situation if they've never dealt with a concealed carry holder who clearly has broken the law and has revealed their firearm. Not worth being bullheaded and intensifying the stress of the situation.

Anyways, you're lucky. If this was downtown, cops would have been called without anybody even speaking to you and you probably would have been slapped with a ticket/escorted out and gotten a really hard time from the police. I've seen it happen a couple of times to other CCL holders.

Please let me know what the ticket was for and how they were escorted out?

Just curious.
