Taking it too personal. They are the pride and joy of many home towns.
Does anybody besides me get disgusted every time of of the people on KFOR puke a story about the Friday night hero's?
Football players are not hero's.
They are football players.
Common sense is not a Gift....
Its a punishment, because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

Then why not call them the "Friday night pride and joy"? Moving a ball up and down a pretty lawn doesn't a hero make. But hey, if people want to diminish the word "hero" by applying to people who don't deserve it, that's their right. It's Dennis' right to gripe about that too.

I'm not saying pissing on people is wrong per-say.......sometimes it's the only option when they catch on fire.... B96
Cops have guns. That could be dangerous. :-P
I would agree it's a misuse of the word hero, but I also think football is a misuse of schools assets, funds, time, and purpose. But it's a good diversion, bread and circus on the local level.
In many schools football is a money maker.
I learned as much on a sports field as in a classroom. Life lessons

I'm guessing it's the small town schools with limited budgets making money off football?
I have no problem with football, just the place it's been given in school.
I agree with Billybob. My high school (Davis) isn't big by any means but everyone got so worked up over football games it was rediculous. The coaches had to teach so they usually had the history classes and although they knew what they were teaching there was a general pass given to the players. Not that players being favored wasn't any different in college.
Firemen = Hero
Football players = Not
"I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?"
The word "hero" has been misused for so long that it may eventually follow the same fate as the word "racist". People throw "racism" and "racist" around so much that the accusation is meaningless. But, I have my own definition of "hero". I define hero as somebody who does the right thing. I inform students that if they are doing the right thing, they can be a hero in somebody's life every day. In our daily walks, simply doing the right thing can be a heroic action as we influence others. Not that anybody asked, but my definition of "superhero" is somebody who does the right thing ALL the time. So, in reality there are no superheroes. But, I strive to be one. We should all strive to be superheroes. Carry on.
Are they not risking blown out knees and broken necks? Self imposed ultimately but still risking.
In alot of small towns across the country they are Friday Night Heroes. Just because they aren't to you doesn't mean they aren't heroes to someone else.
